Artful Dodger (FYI)

The NYE Artful Dodger reunion show was broadcast on Cleveland radio. Of course, being from Philly, I couldn't hear it. Someone posted the show online, so I downloaded it. The sound was just okay, but I thought the performance was great. I was a big fan of theirs back in the day. Too bad some jerk made them take the show down. A lot of fans outside of the Cleveland area probably would have liked to have heard it. Considering the show was broadcast live, I would assume the band wanted as many people as possible to hear them - for free.

Artful Dodger should have had hits --- I love the tunes and *I* like the lead singer's "screeching," too.

Those first two Artful Dodger albums are fantastic.

Wish I could see the reunion show, but my kid sister is having her first child around April 8th, if not sooner, so I'm staying close to home as a good uncle-to-be should.

Involving my beloved Artful Dodger in a discussion about crooner (and mullet wearer) Richard Marx does not make any sense.

Marx's 'music' was the food equivalent of Wonder bread. I defy anyone -- including my loyal defender and still-in-the-closet Bea Arthur luster-after Tony C -- to hear AD's 'Scream', 'Come Close to Me,' 'Get in Line' 'Think Think' or numerous others and not come to the conclusion that they were the best, unheralded rock 'n roll band of the last 30 years. Artful Dodger lives!

Bob:

I sent Tony a mix cd of Artful Dodger, so I know he's heard those songs. He cannot be convinced.

Btw, I'll be at the April 1st show in Cleveland. I couldn't make the NYE show, but I wasn't going to miss a 2nd opportunity to see this band live.

They are second only to the Raspberries in my heart.

You can still hear the entire show at the Artful Dodger Fan Site and Forum plus there's video clips and tons of other new things being added. I'm sorry that it was upsetting to have the files removed. Personally, I don't think many artists would be happy with their material posted on a BIT TORRENT or PEER-TO-PEER sight for people to download without their permission (which they did not have). Why stay in the business if you can't make money (now or in the future - which may be the case). Just because bands like METALLICA and such can afford to pay people to search the web for illegal downloads and lesser-known bands can't, doesn't mean that they don't deserve the same level of respect.

If you want this kind of stuff released, let the record companies know it! Downloading it for free will actually discourage them from releasing it.

As for the sound at the NYE show, and to some respect the 4/1 show - you have to realize that the people mixing the sound are born and raised on bands such as NICKELBACK, LIFEHOUSE, MUDVAYNE, METALLICA, etc. and they don't have a clue how to mix Power Pop such as the RASPBERRIES, ARTFUL DODGER, etc. All they know is long decay, heavy bass, and lots of reverb. I stood behind the sound guy during the 4/1 show and he didn't even tweak the controls during the entire show. But how many bands getting back together to play a show or two can afford their own sound people? the only reason 4/1 sounded better was that Peter Bonta personally came up to the board and corrected the sound during the sound check.

Bill's voice is very distinct sounding, and like any artist's painting, some will like it and some won't - that's life! But, given that he hasn't sang profeesionally for over 25 years - he stayed on key and still offered up a great performance as a frontman.

Plus, how many bands would play for almost 2 hours and then hang out in the AGORA lobby for 3 hours after the show just to sit back and talk to any fan that wants to say hello.

Sorry to be so long winded.....

A Final Note:

The posting of that material almost brought the AD Site to a grinding hault. We had to pull all of the audio down. I was very reluctant to take the time to bother to create and post video clips. People who offered up various audio items to the site got upset. The trouble with the whole peer to peer stuff is that you don't realize (or in some cases care) where the original source files came from - or who has gotten hurt in the process.

Also - the band has gotten upset with people selling bootleg/illegit stuff and distributing it without permission (serveral cases on EBAY alone). That particular bit torrent site had no permision from The Agora, WNCX, or The Band. Some of the other stuff on that site probably wasn't legit - I saw Eric Carmen, The Raspberries, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney live recordings out there (just to name a few) - all without permission I can bet. Their attitude is - we'll allow anything to be posted unless the artist tells us to take it down, we don't need to get permisiion first.

That's just wrong!
