Guest Posted September 6, 2008 Share Posted September 6, 2008 Personally I no longer own any guitars but I do carry, polish, restring, tune and take care of the following and have since 1967 which makes me proud:1968 Gibson Double neck SG 1275 - BlackParker Classic Fly Deluxe- Cherry (Last one personally made by Ken Parker)1965 Gibson Flying V - Black1996 Ric 360-12 - Maple1995 Epiphone Gibson Special Custom - Black1964 Fender Telecaster - Black1968 Gibson Blue Ridge Acoustic 1999 Martin CustomThere have been many others including Strats, Variax,etc.. I can't keep track in my mind we average about 35 guitars on tour and they are basically my responsibility. Gibson discontinued making them after '59, and didn't resume again until '67......and they were a somewhat different instrument at that point (mahogany body instead of korina wood, etc.) but they've always been willing to build one-off custom axes. Just curious...(Wally's V has the '67 style larger pickguard, bridge & truss rod cover)....P.S. If it's one of the '58/'59 originals, it's worth a significant fortune....versus a '67 which is still worth a good bit, but not approaching 6 figures.... The serial number is somewhat hard to read but we and Gibson think it is vintage 67 but could be 59 as well. I started working with Wally in 67 and he already had the V so I am not sure of the date it was built. I will do some additional research and get to the bottom of the dates. Everything on the guitar is original other than the tuning pegs which I changed to Grover's in 1971. The color is black. always has been and it has never been retouched, none of Wally's guitars have been retouched. Every nick and scratch are original. I know I have put a few in them myself. MAM Posted September 7, 2008 Share Posted September 7, 2008 I think it's a pretty safe bet that the V is a 67. V's from 59 had a different look to them and the majority of them were a light color. If I recall right 58/59's had strings through the body also.My V's looked just like Wally's with the exception of the "signature" pickups and mine were purchased in 73 & 74. I took a course in steel string guitar construction in 1978, and after 13 weeks had it mostly done, so I brought it to the best luthier on 48th St in Manhattan (everybody agreed) and he finished it. He thought it sounds like a Guild.1960s Classical guitar - forgot what brand.Crate chorus amp and a Fender champion. I've played since I was about 12. It's my fifth instrument (after bongos and harmonica (age 6) and accordian (age 7-11), and Ukelele (age 11-12). Learned keyboards and wish to learn bass, but guitar's the best instrument by far. Learned all Beatles and many 60s songs words and music cold and can still knock them off (chords only at first). Took courses at the Guitar Study Center in NYC (founded by Simon and Garfunkel and run by Eddie Simon at first) starting 1979 and learned fingerpicking. JohnO Posted September 9, 2008 Share Posted September 9, 2008 Regarding Wally's Flying V - I looked it up, and apparently, Gibson issued a small handful of V's as late as '61/'62 with the '58/'59 specs (natural Korina finish, strings through body, smaller pickguard). The larger pickguard, bodies with non-natural finishes(like black), and later bridge didn't come into play until '67. It's obvious that Gibson didn't keep the best records back then, and it's possible that Wally could have ended up with a leftover '59 body (and serial number) and later finish & appointments. Gibson always viewed the korina guitars from the late 50s as huge failures because they simply didn't sell too many in '58/'59....There are about 100 late 50s Flying V's in existence, less than 50 Explorers...and the Moderne never got off the ground at all (until the 80s version). Complete with 2 retro looking mini humbuckers, Bigsby trem, white sparkle scratchplate, "fingernail" fret markers, Gretsch logos on the control pots, and all for £299 (about $600).
