Hangin' With The Raspberries

Got a question that only a few may know the answer to, (although Eric should). When the Raspberries were on VH1 and played an acoustic , slowed down version of "IWBWY", they recorded several others for the show. What happened to Overnight Sensation," "Last Dance," "Should I Wait" and "Nobody Knows?" Will they ever turn up or are they in the VH1 vault? Were they played acoustic too?

While it was really cool these were offered as bonus items, it was unfortunate they admitted they were intentionally 'degrading' them to download in a rather poor quality, supposedly to prevent bootlegging. I'm not sure what was done to prevent the expensive official DVD from being bootlegged, but...

I still hold out faint hope that someday this full show might be offered in pristine TV-watchable quality the way nature and technology intended, maybe as a website-only limited DVD or higher-quality download. I'd buy it, as I'm sure many, many others would...

Nightman,

The clips were originally intended to be included on the DVD itself, but VH1 "lost" the masters. The source material they provided was not good enough for anything besides the Quicktime downloads. Everyone (including the band) was understandably upset when the masters could not be located, but in the end the band agreed to offer the clips to buyers as they were originally promised when the sets were pre-sold.

Thanks Raspbernie for the astonishing story!

As Chris Hess says, it's difficult to grasp that a show just recorded a few years back by one of the largest TV networks wouldn't be backed up on disc or a computer...SOMEwhere at VH-1, or that none of the guys in the band requested and received copies of the full performance at the time they filmed it. I'd be very surprised if someone at VH-1 doesn't have a copy of the show somewhere; hopefully a pristine copy will turn up eventually and they can then either offer high-quality downloads or possibly even it as a DVD, maybe with some additional footage from the renuion tour, rehearsals, etc. That would probably be complicated due to VH-1's involvement and ownership of the show's footage, though...

Yeah, Bernie -- thanks for the background. It is odd, as Nightman points out, that master tapes can be "lost" today. We always hear about unfortunate problems with record companies having lost classic 1950s and '60s recordings. And the lost Boats Against the Current tapes are legendary around here. But to lose a new recording made at VH1's studios here in the 21st century? Hard to fathom....

I LOVE that ballad version of "I Wanna Be with You." It's been posted here many times before, but it's worth repeating.... That was the perfect Raspberries moment (IMHO), considering it came three decades after the original and that the band's playing was so good and that the harmonies sounded so awesome.... And isn't it nice to see a chick (if I can use a '70s term) on stage with Raspberries?

And I love the "feel" of "IWBWY" as a ballad --- the way Raspberries replaced urgency with something almost spiritual. Ah, what a great moment....

Don't get me wrong --- I will always love the original, and I also prefer rockin' Raspberries, but... hearing a different take on "IWBWY" is awesome, especially because it was done by the original lineup.
