L.A. Times Connection

Recommended Posts

Bernie or Al--I sent Richard Cromelin of the L.A. Times an email regarding "Live On Sunset Strip" and he is just now getting back to me. Richard gave a great review of "Starting Over" and was the Raspberries biggest supporter at the L.A. Times. He also did a fantastic review of Eric at the Roxy. This could be a golden opportunity for promoting "LSS". Can we get a copy in his hands with all the promotional stuff you can come up with? Here's the email I sent him with his email contact at the Times:

its not an advance anymore, but sure, if you can ask someone to send....thanks

Richard,

Remember a couple of years ago I emailed you about the Raspberries getting back together to play the HOB in Hollywood? I was going to give you my extra ticket:)

That show is coming out on cd/dvd on July 31. It was mixed by Mark Linett, and from what I've heard it will knock your socks off.

Let me know if you'd be interested in hearing an advance copy and I will ask the Raspberries PR man to send you one.

Best,

Kirk Smith

Ryko appeared to be very stingy with review copies this time. The Editor/Publisher of the mag I write for got copies of the new Robert Gordon and Kelly Willis CDs, both on Ryko, to review, but no 'Berries....and the release date of the Gordon one was also 7/31.

OK gang...looks like it's "grass roots" time again.

Both Richard Cromelin at the L.A. Times and Mike Marrone at XM were on the "media friends" of the band list I gave Ryko last MAY! They were to receive their copies FIRST!!

JohnO - give me the name and address of the mag you're referring to.

I'll *kindly* let the fine folks at Ryko know about these miscues...again.

Thanks for the feedback, and keep it coming!

Al - Don't worry about it....I've already bought several copies, and am reviewing one of them for the mag (Brutarian Quarterly)....the Editor/Publisher isn't a 'Berries fan, so don't bother getting Ryko to send him a copy - had they sent him one, I would have ended up with it anyway!

Ok, I'm very dense apparently so someone please explain this to me from a business standpoint. Ryko expects to make money off of a band/CD it doesn't promote how...? Why would you agree to a contract if you have no intentions of promoting the release? I don't get it. Highly anticipated reunion, sellout shows, fans coming in from other countries, celebrity fans, stellar 2005 reviews --- why wouldn't Ryko promote?

Al - Brutarian is based (I think) in Burke, Va., the home of the Editor/Publisher. Let me double check with Dom to make sure he got the Gordon and Willis CDs directly from Ryko (which I'm pretty sure is the case - I know for sure they're promo copies...)

Thanks, JohnO.

While I'm all about the grass roots efforts we're putting forth to help the new release along, we all need to be as careful as we can when throwing this stuff out here on the message boards. Make sure you confirm the info you're putting out here, and that the info is updated.

I'm not shy at all about contacting Ryko to let them know of our concerns - I tore them up and down the other day after reading these posts about Richard Cromelin, Mike Marrone and The Brutarian only to find that two of those three posts that I reacted to were inaccurate.

This is not a "beat down" at all - I totally applaud your passion and dedication to the cause, and by all means keep it up!

I have no problem continuing to push Ryko, but I need to be sure I'm being accurate with them when I do. Otherwise I just turn into the boy who cried "wolf" one too many times.

Al
