DeanTylerVO Posted June 3, 2007 Share Posted June 3, 2007 EC....I have read a few times that Mike McBride in addition to being a powerful drummer actually had a voice that did and could be used as a lead.But there seems to be nothing out there where we can hear him directly.Can you shed some light on the your take on his vocal abilities? DRR Posted June 3, 2007 Share Posted June 3, 2007 I've seeen Mike sing lead in the early '70s Cleveland band "Target" -- between Cyrus Erie and Raspberries time frame. (Wally was even in one version of that band.) As I recall, they did lots of Stones and Faces. Mike was a good front man with a solid rock voice and a good stage presence. If I remember correctly, Eric even brought him out front at the Cleveand Agora for an early EC Band performance encore of Honky Tonk Women. Jerry Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 I remember Target doing a show at Mentor High School... it was held in the gymnasium but had more of a "concert" feel than a "dance". They opened up with Street Fightin' Man. I remember McBride wearing red pants and had a white scarf around his neck. He was a great singer, had a lot of charisma, and came across as a real rock star.That was the great thing about so many of the Cleveland bands... you never felt you were seeing a bunch of high school wannabes who were trying to imitate the popular bands. They were so talented, so cool, had so much style that it usually felt like you were seeing a national recording act. We were certain they were all going to make it big. Roadie #3 Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 I was the roadie for Target and Mike was the front man although sometimes he went back on the drum kit. Wally played lead, Mike Chandler played rhythm, I don't remember the bass players last name Vic __ and I don't remember the other drummers name. I remember playing all over the place. Spent many nights sitting at the bar just soaking in the great rock-n-roll of the day. Yeah...Vic "something"...I remember him. Remember the other band Wally was in...POE??? Roadie #3 Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 Yes, those were great days. I really loved playing Geneva -on-the-lake and it was true Rock & Roll. Right next door was the Freeport Inn and we would go over on our breaks and watch Freeport perform. I remember the first time we went over to the Freeport Inn I could not get in, I was only 17 and did Wally and Mike give me crap for being so young. Well they talked with the owner of the club Otto N and he allowed me to come in as long as I agreed not to drink any beer. To this day I still have not had a beer, so I kept my part of the agreement. There must have been 7 or 8 clubs in GOTL I remember the Cove where the Jaggers played and Donnie Iris was always packing them in. And lastly we got paid in cash and Mike and Wally would send me down to a bar at the other end of the strip, I think it was called the Sunken Bar to get our pay which was all in small bills and in a paper grocery bag. I would get the bag of money and then walk all thew way back down the strip back to the club. Its unbelievable that I never got robbed. I heard good & bad about his dealings, but he WAS a character!! You said it was amazing you weren't robbed carrying the bag of money...you know, people weren't like they are today...you COULD walk down the street then and not have that fear.GOTL was party central back in the late 60's...the streets were filled with people all night long...rock music blared from every bar...the beer flowed...the chicks were easy...but crime was never a concern of mine.
