seattlesteve
I agree with Eric and Tony. Would have been perfect for Katherine to come out with a rocker of a song in a hot black leather outfit (ala 68 comeback special). The unexpected might have really changed things. Look what it did for Olivia Newton John, when the sweet, quiet girl next door did that final number in Grease back in 78 in an ultra-tight (sewn on)black outfit, wild hair, etc. Everyone was going "That's Olivia?"Changed her image and career for a few years.BTW, it worked for Elvis too, his career was slipping at the time too, and out of the public eye a bit, but when they tuned into the 68 special and he sounded AND looked good, it helped. Plus he demonstrated personality and attitude, Katherine is too Stepford so far, much points to nervousness.Even if she was hitting those melodramatic Whitney/Mariah/Celine notes, the show isn't "America's Best Vocalist" it's Idol. An Idol needs to be the whole package. Besides chops, she's going to have to show presence, attitude, and more physical appeal to pull in the male votes. The ultimate idea is to sell a bunch of records. Is it any coincidence that so many young female pop singers of recent started out as cute and wholesome (and still mindless fluff Britney, Christine, Jessica,et all) and all were obviously advised along the way to give the image more edge and flaunt to sell not only records but concert tickets. Like them, hate them, they've made some labels some serious dough, even with a deservingly perishable career.Look at even Kelly Clarkston, a bonifide talent (America picked right), her videos aren't getting cuter, they progressively getting hotter and edgier, and a lot of people are buying her stuff.Still a decent singer needs to do whatever it takes to get that first break (and this show is a break on a silver platter) Katherine has one last chance and it's going to take more than a good song. Madonna's lengthy career is because of reinventing herself. Katherine has one week to do it. Break out performance, she has it wrapped up and a contract, more of the same, she's next to go (I'd start studying my lyrics now.)From the what the heck do I know files... Tony Cartmill
This is just like a couple of years ago when Latoya was voted off 4th, when she was the best singer over the top 3 that advanced. And that was a weak year...
Tim From Wisconsin
All I ask is that Ryan Seacrest goes away! He is so fricking full of himself and who he knows - Who cares what Rebecca Romijn thinks, and why is he letting her request a song? By the time they rushed through the ending, Chris didn't even have time to thank anyone, and as usual the show ends before the person leaving is done singing. I agree with everything that Eric said about Katharine - I can only hope that she will end up winning. I like Elliott, but I'm not sure how they would market him as an "Idol". I have no use for Taylor - The people who run Idol would have no way to promote him. He was a fun novelty for a while, but I don't think Mr. "Soul Patrol" can sing well enough to sell CD's. That's what it is all about in the long run. In the meantime, I'll be watching it until the end. We'll see what happens. Tim
Tony Cartmill
Tim, Rebecca was there to promote her new X-men movie, and the request was already "planned spontaneity."Nothing happens by chance during American Idol broadcasts except singing flubs and Paula's weekly mood swings. julesberry
I understand Paula's mood swings are due to the two Cosmos she drinks to relax before the show.
Tony Cartmill
Kathryn has a great smile, but did you see her face when she was informed they were the bottom 2? She almost lost it. But the last minute rush to name the loser sent everybody into shock mode and probably saved Kathryn from tears. So she can wipe that smile off her face when motivated. Tony Cartmill
Just listened to some cuts off Latoya London's CD.A bit too urban Mariah-like R&B for me on some songs, but a couple of ballads and other songs were really good. David Foster is working with her...sweet.

LC
Really, I agree with you who feel Chris Daugherty was the best option for "Idol" (good point on the difference, Seattle Steve). I supposed I'd go with Katherine now, if that Eric message somehow gets to her...
Tony Cartmill
You know, I think Taylor could get some people to go see him on tour...On a Florida Rest Home and/or Wedding Tour, maybe...
seattlesteve
I just rewatched the CMT special where Bon Jovi and Sugarland played together, and there is no one ever, on Idol, that is even close to Jennifer Nettle's, yet no one knows about her. The special showcases not only her country chops, but man can she rock, and that's where she belongs. She's the goods, and you will be hearing more from her.Don't believe me, email me, and I'll get you a sample.SS
Paulie Mississippi
Another of the newer country gals who can rock out is Gretchen Wilson. There was a special (and I think a DVD) of her performing some rock classics... But I agree that Jennifer is so far above and beyond what the "i-dull" offers... Watching her duet with Jon Bon Jovi... a guy who has been enrapturing the audience for decades... and she fit right in; not stealing the show but not getting left out either... That episode is in fact on CMT right now...
JohnO
My sister, who lives in Richmond, VA., may be on "American Idol" tonight. One day last week, Elliott came home (he's from Richmond), with all of the cameras following his every move. Apparently, he used to work up the street from where my sister works (US bankruptcy court), and everyone from her office went out to join the hordes greeting him. My sister says she was wearing a big green "Cat In The Hat" type of hat, and carrying a sign saying "Elliott - Richmond Loves You", or some such nonsense. (She figured if THAT didn't warrant at least a shot or two from the camera, nothing would!)....(Pretty scary, considering she's 50!)
bobberann
I have been reading this thread with interest since I am a fan of the show. Eric's assessment of Katherine was on the money. She's got the voice, but there is something about her persona that bugs me. At this point, I would like for Elliott to win. And finally, I'd like to know what songs Clive Davis chose for the final 3 to sing.
Tony Cartmill
I predict a dip in the ratings tonight because many fans are pissed that the best Idol prospect was voted off last week.
Craig Benfer
Yes, Eric's assessment of Katherine was on the money. My opinion of Katherine has been up and down. I wan't in favor of her even making the Final 12, but then she started to impress me and became my favorite. The last few weeks, though, she has started to oversing everything. I like Elliott's voice but he doesn't sing with any passion. Just look into the singers eyes and you can tell if it's being sung from the heart. That's the same I felt about young Diana DeGarmo a couple of seasons ago. So, I would have to say that Taylor is my favorite right now. Not really the Idol type, but he is infectious. Eric Carmen
Clive's choices were just awful. I'd sure like to know how anyone could make "Dancing In The Dark" their own. What was Taylor supposed to do, slow it down and sing it like Ray Charles? And the LAST thing Katherine needed was to be asked to interpret an R. Kelly ballad. SHE SHOULD STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM R&B AS IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! THAT SONG TEMPTED HER INTO TRYING THE MARIAH/WHITNEY VOCAL HISTRIONICS AGAIN, AND AGAIN SHE FAILED! KATHERINE....DON'T GO THERE!!! Just sing the notes. Randy's comments were right on the money tonight. I agreed with him on everything he said. Elliot's going home tomorrow. He sang "Open Arms" like a Vegas lounge singer. His second number was all over the place. Nice kid. Good voice. Pack your bag, buddy. Adios. It's Katherine and Taylor in the final week. Katherine has the look and a wonderful voice but she's lacking that spark for me. I think Taylor HAS the spark! He's more exciting to watch. And people just like him. He's the little engine that could. "You Are So Beautiful" was a GREAT song for him. It might just be time for a guy to win it after Kelly and Carrie. Next week should be interesting. Anything could happen. ec
Tony Cartmill
ec, We haven't seen the show on the west "coast full of desperate fools" yet. Katherine has the potential to make you say WOW! with a fine performance. Elliot rates better if you close your eyes and don't look at him when he sings. His voice has a nice quality to it. "Here's your new American Idol! Don't watch him when he sings and you will enjoy him more..."
Eric Carmen
For better or for worse, a very big part of success in the world of pop music is how you look. Try to picture the video of "Every Breath You Take" with Sting as a redhead with short curly hair, weighing in at about 275 pounds. Doesn't work does it? How about "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Macy Gray. Nope. Sayonara, Elliot
mellie
I don't know if I get AI at the same time as the west coast, but Taylor just finished "Dancing In The Dark" and if his enunciation had been crisper, it would have been a better performance. As for Elliott's look - nothing there that can't be fixed if he wants to. ... okay, back to the show.
Raspbernie
I made some disparaging comments about Taylor Hicks while discussing this year's American Idol contestants with Eric a couple of months ago. I think I called him, "that old guy!" I remember Eric saying, "I like him." Who knew? If Elliott gets booted off tonight, Taylor Hicks will be the next American Idol!Bernie
marlene
I didn't think I liked Taylor much until his performance last night..but I have to agree, of the three contestants that remain, he's the most "entertaining". Katharine did a nice version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", but not good enough to make me think she should win the competition. I agree with what you said about Elliott, Eric. He seems like a very nice person, and has a nice voice, but probably NOT the "Idol" look. We'll see tonight..... M.
bobberann
I didn't like the songs Clive Davis picked, but the judges picks were right on the money. Katherine's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was great and that was the best she has sounded this season. I like Elliott's voice, but it was not his best night. He is definitely going home and I think Taylor will win next week.Eric: What songs would you have picked for the final 3 to sing?
seattlesteve
Right or wrong, Elliott is gone.As far as the finals, disregarding who SHOULD win, who will win seems to close to call and probably will depend on next weeks performance.
