marvin
Fantastic! Please give us your review, and hopefully another photo op. Oh and by the way, can you ask Bruce how he was convinced to write the liner notes for the cd??!!
bmfc1
From backstreets.com:November 4 / Cleveland, OH / Quicken Loans ArenaNotes: A knockout performance for Cleveland, with a setlist to match. Every E Street album was represented in the show tonight with the exception of The River -- and if you count River-era B-side "Be True," which had its tour premiere, it was a sweep. Representing Greetings was another tour debut, "It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City." Paired with "She's the One," it was just massive. "Tunnel" represented Tunnel, and from The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle in the encore, it was another stunning "Kitty's Back." All that, and they still had room for "woman power," as Bruce put it, with Patti spotlighted on "Town Called Heartbreak" as she returned to the fold after her absence in St. Paul. Oh, and speaking of woman power, Bruce referenced the Lynn Goldsmith photography exhibit down the road at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "I hope they don't have pictures of me with my pants down!" In the crowd: The Raspberries' Eric Carmen, and retired longtime Plain Dealer rock critic (and huge Springsteen fan) Jane Scott.
Cozmik
Was Billy Sullivan there? I thought I spotted him.
sllvnbil
I was there!!! Bruce & the E Street Band was awesome to say the least. One of the best rock shows I've been to!!!
marvin
Glad that you enjoyed it Billy. So what do you think of "Girls In Their Summer Clothes"?
seattlesteve
It occurred to me the last time I saw Bruce that instead of a concert, it was more of a rock and roll revival, or church, featuring pastor Springsteen. It's something else. Not unlike Dylan, or The Grateful Dead, you can go to back to back Springsteen concerts and you have a radically different set list. I assume that's still the case.Billy, who were you most impressed with guitar wise?
seattlesteve
Eric,He plays a very different piano style than you, what do you thing of The Professor's, Roy Bittan (Mr. Apreggio)piano style. Seems to really fit well with Bruce's compositions, slow ala Jungle Land or uptempo ala Prove it all Night. Not sure which is chicken or egg. seattlesteve
Marvin, is it just me or do you hear bits of the Who's "The Kids Are Alright", in Bruce's "Girls In Their Summer Clothes"?BTW I know I'm a broken record but I'd love to hear a Raspberries/Overdub harmony laden treatment of that Who cover. Doug
marvin said: Glad that you enjoyed it Billy. So what do you think of "Girls In Their Summer Clothes"? Man, what a great song! It's one of 2 or 3 on the new album where I hear a strong power pop vibe that makes me think he might've been listening to the Berries' Greatest Hits again. (I also hear that in "Your Own Worst Enemy" and "I'll Work For Your Love") Plus, he sings very differently on this and a couple of other songs - very melodic and less of the hoarse shout that he uses most of the time. Fantastic! Doug
marvin
Yes, "Girls" is an amazing song and very un-Bruce like. Harkens back to the days of "The River" when he was writing in a very pop vein.
sllvnbil
I liked all the new material. "Radio Nowhere" is the only new song I heard before. Nils and Miami Steve played real well but I was really impressed with Bruce's guitar playing!!! Those Tele's were sounding great!! Nils was playing some really nice slide and pedal steel parts. I was impressed with the whole show!!
seattlesteve
Billy, I too have over the years become impressed with Bruce's guitar chops.. his presence and singing are so strong I tended to watch him, not the frets, and figured Stevie and Niles were holding down the fort capabley. Heres a rare clip that Marvin and I have shared, circa 1978, with an extended prelude to "Prove It All Night". Bruce wanders on the stage and looks like he just woke up, then plays some mean guitar intro. When it comes to a rock show, he gets it. JohnO
"Marvin, is it just me or do you hear bits of the Who's "The Kids Are Alright", in Bruce's "Girls In Their Summer Clothes"?"Seattle Steve - I posted this several weeks ago, when "Magic" came out....the main riff of the song was swiped from "TKAA" (Substitute "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" for "(I don't mind) other guys looking at my girl".......) - same feel, too.......and NO, it's not a complaint, just an observation... marvin
I think that you might have something there John. I need to listen to both songs again.
marvin
John you're right. Those lines are very similar.
JohnO
I just realized - I screwed the Who's lyrics up in my last post - should be "(I don't mind) other guys dancin' with my girl"BTW, here's that excerpt from my post of 10/3, under the "Springsteen On Being Musically Relevant" thread....."Second, why all the fuss over the Tommy Tutone/Warren Zevon borrowing/influence/etc. on "Radio Nowhere?"? Hell, I hear traces (or more) of "Baby I Love You" in "You'll Be Comin' Down", Brian Wilson in "Your Own Worst Enemy", The Who's "The Kids Are Alright" in "Girls In Their Summer Clothes", and "Piano Man" in "I'll Work For Your Love".....not to mention recycling parts of "Tenth Ave. Freezeout" in "Livin' In The Future". So what? - Great musicians borrow all the time!"
marvin
Yes it's the "I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl" from "The Kids Are Alright", and the first line of each of the verses in "Girls" that are very similar. Good ear John! Since I've always loved "Kids", maybe that's why I loved "Girls" instantly?
