lbigirl
Dear Eric, (feeling like Dorothy going before the GREAT and wonderful Oz, and just about as nervous!) There is something has been such an outstanding moment in one of the Raspberries' songs for me for many years. I can even remember the first time I noticed it, and once I did, it's been there forever more. I don't know whether it was planned, an accident or a true moment of feeling, but during the first chorus of "Let's Pretend", when you sing the very first Ohhhh of the Oh No's, something amazing happens, IMHO. For lack of a better word, your voice cracks, but not in a flat way at all. It seems it's so filled with feeling that you can't contain it and does it ever add to that song! Maybe it was nerves, being tired or just your voice at that moment but I have never heard it again in any other version. I have to tell you that for the last 34 years, every single time I hear it, my stomach just flip flops. Thank you for that! But I've wondered if you remember it even happening, what recorded take it might have been or was there even a discussion at all? Going out to click my heels together and repeat "there's no place like ec.com, there's no place like ec.com..."
Raspbernie
Tory,You've identified the "goosebump" moment in the song for me, too!Bernie
Angloberry
Me too! I thought I was the only one who had ever noticed it! Surely one of those "sprinkle of fairy dust" moments that you can't plan? I remember watching Eric singing it live on the Don Kirshner show and the let down when he sang that part "straight"! MAM
That's the wonderful thing about music, those little bits of extra "icing" on the cake, that make a great song even greater.
mannoman
Many times the artist will 'create' a sound that is noticed by the listener but was not considered 'special' by the artist at the time. 'tis a shame 'cause as a fan I look forward to hearing an artist recreate the sound live.Raspsberries recordings are LOADED with these gems. Some of Wally's fills raise the hair on my neck 35 years later. To their credit, da boys nailed virtually all of the 'special' sounds during the reunion concerts and added a few more. Still an awesome band.
HT from Mo
There is one of the Raspberries' songs that give me the "goosebumps"."I Can Hardly Believe You're Mine" - the part where it's just Eric, the piano and the drums in the background. It really gives me the shivers and it's like a WOW! moment. - Definitely a "sprinkle of fairy dust" hit this one too!HT
raspathens
Here's one - toward the end of Ecstacy where the only sound is Eric playing a guitar part that sounds like two guitars. No vocals, nothing else. Not only does it fill the room with energetic and powerful music, it expresses a confidence in the song that is captured by that solitary performance. That is what the electric guitar can produce in the hands of a true musician. These other guitarists that think playing a million notes a second is musicianship could learn a lot from that and other 'Berries/Carmen songs. Paulie Mississippi
raspathens; back in "the day" when 8-track tapes still ruled... Capitol Record & Tape Club issued "Raspberries Best" with the "Ecstacy" track padded... they doubled up on that guitar part... the final instrumental filled 20 seconds or so were rolled over and repeated to fill part of the void that would have been left without it. It was something that was so cool to have and to hear... long gone I'm afraid, but it was there and so much better than having them "cut" into a song then fade in and fade out to switch tracks! Paul Davie
OMG - apparently I wasn't the "only only" one who felt the same thing. I always thought that 'crack' was EC's expression of angst, desparation, sadness...whatever. It made for a perfect post-teenage moment of wanting but not getting.Let's Pretend has always been my fave tune in the entire collection. I'm very glad others heard the same 'thing'....and I love how just that simple, unplanned imperfection touched all of you who have posted so far. marlene
The end of "If You Change Your Mind" does the "goosebumps" thing for me....WOW !!!!
dianed
Marlene, I am total agreement with you. When I hear the end of IYCYM, the pleeeeeeading, the begging...my heart actually hurts !!!
mannoman
HT,I agree. When I first heard "I Can hardly Believe You're Mine" I felt they had finally nailed the sound they were striving to attain. Just my two cents.
danmichel
The moment for me is the first "Baby, Let's Pretend" of the first chorus...It's like I knew if was in for something amazing the first time I heard it...I still think "Let's Pretend" is blessed with the most beautiful chorus in pop music...It just soars! Yeah, one of my favorite things is in "If you change your mind" Where Eric is singing "Won't you change your mind" and "Oh Yeah" and the strings come in and bend up... Tiggsherby
I'm with you, Marlene....If You Change Your Mind was the highlight of the New York show for me, sometimes I play the ending of that song over and over again in my car!
Julie
Yep, for me, "If You Change Your Mind" is the be all, end all, quintessential Raspberry Goosebump Song! Love the "Let's Pretend" crackle as well!
mamacote
......there are so many glorious "goose-bump" moments on raspberries records.........it's the reason we're all still mezmerized by them.........like eric is with the beatles, i am endlessly fascinated by the music that our boys made, and it has enriched my life profoundly. HT from Mo
I remember reading in Eric's book about his thoughts on IYCYM. He described the ending as "someone stepping on a cat's tail". All the wailing, etc. Funny stuff. I personally like the ending to the song and I even sing along - I'm sure that my singing sounds like the above description. James
I love the song and especially love the ending...one of the top highlights of the Raspberries 4 albums....and that's saying something.
Steeler Deb
I have the Raspberries Greatest CD and the cover has comments from all the members. The comment from Wally has him quoting Shelly Yakus "It sounds like somebody stepped on a cat's tail" referring to I Reach For The Light. austinberries
the passionate vocal 'crack' in 'Lets Pretend' was the stuff teen girls' dreams are made of (& i wasn't even a teen girl! ;-) ... it is definitely a 'Barry White, move over' moment... lbigirl
Well austin, I certainly am not a teenaged girl anymore, not even close but I think part of the magic of Rasberries and Eric's music is, it can still make you feel that way!
