austinberries
open solicitation to Eric & Raspberries - if you guys do hit the road for some more shows to herald the new Live @ Sunset Strip release, i'd like to suggest you guys consider checking in w/ Scott McCarl & seeing if he'd be ok w/ y'all adding a version of 'Play On' at your shows. to me, this is the *only* thing missing from the set list (well, i could prob come up w/ a couple more), but certainly in place of any cover tunes, this would be preferable. i'd go so far as to say that this is one tune that defines the Raspberries' (esp late 'berries) sound almost as much as any of Eric's tunes (& that's going out on a limb). i wonder if this is something y'all could work out for us hardcore fans who would be glad to draw up your set list on any given night?... marvin
"Play On" has been on every set list (including the new live cd), with Eric singing an outstanding lead vocal.Marv

Raspyrock
Sounded fine to me!!
marvin
It was explained in "Marathon Man", but if I have the story right, Scott came in with the chorus ("Play On, while the lights shine around your head..."), thinking that this was the verse of the song, and Eric was the one who said that this should be the chorus. I believe that they wrote the rest of the song together, but Eric is the expert on that question. Marv

"Play On" is on the 21-song Deluxe Edition (with 5-song DVD) of the new "Live On Sunset Strip" with Eric singing lead (not on the less expensive 13-song Standard Edition) that's at better retailers now. Scott McCarl and Eric Carmen have renewed the copyright on the song they wrote together, and the song is published by Eric Carmen Music (administered by Universal-Songs of Polygram, Inc.) and by Scott's publisher Xberry Music, according to the liner notes (which say the copyright has been renewed). austinberries
don - thx for the clarification, i just listened to it ('play on') on a store-bought version of the new release. great tune & one i wasn't originally familiar w/btw, were you the one that was going to post a recent radio interview podcast you did w/ some of the 'berries? maybe it was the other 'don' that posts here? either way, do you know where i can stream or download it?thx again
Don_Krider
That would be one of the other "Dons" --- Don Hurley who hosted the radio broadcast, posts as Don H. He'd be the one to ask about whether they will archive the show for streaming or how to get a download of the show. You could leave him a message on his post. Don Krider one of at least three "Dons" who post on this site...
Eric Carmen
Actually, it was just the other way around. Scott had the guitar rifff and what eventually became the verse. He was stumped because he thought it was the chorus and he couldn't figure out what the "verse" should be. I listened to it and told him I thought what he had was the verse, not the chorus. I then went over to the piano and banged out the chorus. We wrote the bridge together. It was our first try at writing together. We went on to write "Cry" the same way. Scott's verse, my chorus. ec
MJ
Doesn't matter who did what Eric it's a F**kin BRILLIANT song live!
austinberries
ah yeah, i shoulda known ec had written the chorus, b/c the chorus is what totally kills in that song. thanks for clarifying, eric
Eric Carmen
It was a true collaberative effort, but it all started with Scott's riff and verse. ec
MJ
It's a great song Eric - especially when you did it live....
marvin
I never even dreamed that they would attempt this song. Since Scott was the lead singer, I guess I just assumed it was his song and therefore off-limits. When I heard Eric sing it that first time (lucky enough to hear it at the soundcheck), I couldn't believe his incredible vocal performance. In my mind he was able to channel both Scott and John Lennon into his vocal.Marv
MJ
I will be going to Orlando next Friday and my cd of choice will be LFTSS of course - I will be jamming driving on I-4 (the battlefield of Florida roads) where everyone is going 95 in a 40 lol. Play On will be blaring on my cd player repeatedly as well as GATW.
marvin
What is "LFTSS"?Marv
Kirk
Would you believe, "Live From The Sunset Strip" (I used my secret agent decoder). Kirk.
marvin
Well I thought so, but the title is actually "Live On Sunset Strip", so that would make it "LOSS." On second thought...Marv
MJ
Oh Sorry - I just always think of it as "the Sunset Strip" lol. Duuuh.
Muzza
At least that would make it LOTSS And we can do with LOTSS of Raspberries music eh!! Muzza

Captain Harlock
Play On was one of those songs that always got left off of EVERY "Best of..." compilation. I remember getting the "Very Best Of The Raspberries" CD (Zap! label) that someone had brought back from the U.K. for me and the first thing I said was "Hey, where's Play On?". It was always a standout track. I'm glad to see you guys include it in the set list.
Crg2
Man that"Live on the Sunset Strip" version of "Play On" KICKS A$$!! It's what rawk is about!!
seattlesteve
Scott, Wally, and Billy can all channel a pretty mean John Lennon. Wally and Billy both can sing a great lead on No Reply. No question Eric can shift gears vocally as well as anyone.
seattlesteve
Also, at the very first reunion show (and probably the first official performance of the song with EC on lead vocals) Eric acknowledged and dedicated the song to Scott.
