seattlesteve
Watched the full concert DVD completely for the third time last night.. keeps getting better. It occured to me that the quality of the sound and performance on this reunion series of shows has to be by all accounts the best they have ever done, and one of the best live performances ever.. also how perfect "Starting Over" would have been strategically sequenced in a reunion performance. If I Can Remember, EC indicated that it was omitted purely on technical fidelity reasons, and would have been included. Is that right?
Kirk
Feedback or no feedback, I'm still trying to figure out who to bribe get a copy of that one! To borrow from the dialogue on the dvd "I love that song" Kirk.

Poor4Life
You know, when I watched the DVD, I swore they did "Starting Over" in Chicago when I saw them. Then when it wasn't on there, I thpought maybe I had imagined it. Now that I know there were technical problems, that clears it up!So, did they only do the two Beatles tunes in Chicago? I would have really loved to have those...Jeff

CubbiefanMike
They also played "Drivin Around" In Chicago... maybe we can wait for the next DVD to include those songs.

hosskratz
They didn't do Starting Over in Chicago, but they did Driving Around and Crusin Music, the first going right into the second song and it rocked. I believe that Raspberries did Starting Over at the first Cleveland show. I remember someone posting that Eric jumbled the word just before optimistic, perhaps because his kids were in attendance. MAM
We were at the first Cleveland show and I recall him using the F bomb in "Starting Over", which surprised me. His kids were just a few rows in front of us. Of course that's almost 3 years ago and my memory may be fading! Update: just asked my wife and she recalls him using the word in all it's color and glory also. Buy hey, she's getting old too. We may both be wrong. danmichel
I was wondering if the word would be heard...But i was afraid to ask.
Paulie Mississippi
I wonder if that might have been the first time "the word" was recorded on a song... and if so, can't Eric then blame himself for all the Rap-Crap that is full of such words now?
Reid C.
I don't think you can blame Eric for the proliferation of vulgar grammar when it comes to rap and hip-hop, Paulie. Anything that is used with endless repitition is rapidly striped of any impact that it may have once had. It sure shocked me the first time I heard Starting Over, but it certainly did express the absolute biterness one can feel when one's optimism is sadly misplaced or betrayed. This is one of those cases where there is only one word that will do the job. Some might consider me hypocritical for giving Eric a pass while holding the rap industry's feet to the fire. Then again, the "F" word has probably never been put to such appropriate or, dare I say, "classy," use. Reid
seattlesteve
Only two profane syllables recorded over a 30 year period isn't much. The whole point is to add occasional emphasis, the rappers that swear in every line make you numb, and ironically no longer has any meaning or emphasis. The potty word works because Eric didn't use the word for its own sake. The word was appropriate for its context. That line stays with you forever, because it has a great rhythm to it. That rhythm needs those two syllables. As for the words themselves, I think that that particular line drips with amazing pathos. It evokes a certain combination of tiredness, anger, and defeat we have all felt at one time or another. It never did sound shocking to me-just exquisitely plaintive. raspathens
I have this image of a beautiful young woman in a long flowing red dress sitting down to a piano at the Miss America pageant and sweetly playing and singing the uncensored version of Starting Over. When Eric sang the f-bomb at the first concert in Cleveland, my 12 year old turned to me with a grin and said "did he just say fu@#in'?" I explained that he did and asked my son not to say it again. He's been using the word ever since - jk. No harm done - It's like when your kid sees a statue of a naked woman at an art gallery - it's art. And she's usually a bit heavy.
MJ
I remember playing All Right Now when it first came out and I could have sworn that Paul Rodgers was always singing "before thay raise the F*cking rates" - I still sing it that way because it sounds good lol. So I have no problem with Eric using it - as it fit what he was trying to say perfectly. Now rap lyrics make Eric look like a choir boy (get it lol) in terms of expressing a mood. Luckily I don't try and listen to rap and I don't have any kids so I don't have to put up with it lol.
marvin
Funny you should say that MJ. At the time "All Right Now" came out, I was 14 and in a band, and THAT's the lyrics we sang, because that's what it sounded like.Marv
MJ
I'm glad I was not the only one lol - - but then, on GATW - I used to sing "all alone while screwing me, I had a hole in the place my heart should be" - I know it makes no sense but that's what I heard when I was 12.... something must have been on my brain...but what LMAO! I was too young! So if you see me at a show and I start singing those lyrics - hit me please - I don't want to embarass Eric lol.
Raspyrock
Ok MJ, you're not too alone on this. Many of my friends, and myself for a while, thought that GATW said "... Woh-oh-no a-screwin' me, I had..." --- just teen-age hormones raging, that's all!!(Just don't tell my folks, OK!?)
raspathens
Raspy : You mean that's not what he's singing?
Raspyrock
You too, huh? OK, maybe sometimes I still sing it that way -- but not in public -- not for karaoke. Karaoke lyrics are off too and I have to adjust. While I know it's "Before her love..." - one karaoke version has it "For her love I was ...". Now people are starting to request me to sing Raspberries at karaoke. Used to only be requests for Seger, AC/DC, Whitesnake & Def Lep. Got any decent karaoke bars in Athens --- maybe I should make a jaunt over there, raspathens??
raspathens
Oh, and here's another weird one: In IWBWY where he sings "Close those cries and be thrilled" I actually thought he sang "Close your eyes and be still"!! Can you imagine?
