I think this is part of "The Great McCartney Mystery." We all know what brilliant songs he wrote from 1964 to 1969. And none us of can make any sense of the inconsistency of his solo work ever since. You may or may not like every single song I've written as a Raspberry and as a solo artist, but I've never put a piece of junk like "Soily" on record. And Paul continues to play the awful "C Moon" in concert, even today. I just can't figure out why. Everyone has been waiting for another 'Yesterday" or even another "Can't Buy Me Love" but they just haven't come. There have been some really good moments like "Back Seat Of My Car" and "Everynight," but then there's "Junior's Farm" and "C Moon." I'm just baffled by it. ec

Love EC's honesty and integrity!

Kirk, he's like us and the little boy in the story of the Emperor's New Clothes.

I actually like "Lost in the Shuffle." I don't know whether Eric's fond of it, but... I remember when the Tonight You're Mine album came out, “Shuffle” might have been my favorite song on the album—a lively burst of rock'n'roll that spewed out anger at all the political tomfoolery of the day. I remember frequently calling my college radio station to request it.

Yet I know it’s not a favorite here. I bet if you counted up the number of times each Eric composition has been mentioned on this fine bulletin board, "Lost in the Shuffle" would finish dead last. I don't remember it turning up much in conversations...

To me, "Lost in the Shuffle" was Eric channeling Chuck Berry and getting into social commentary—what's wrong with that?

Didn't get Eric including "Junior's Farm" as worthy of being considered junk. JF to me is in PM's top 5.

Re Lost in the shuffle, I like it ok, but it's a little hollow and screechy.....I think it has more potential,  if it had been produced differently.

PS overall, I like Mac's solo stuff more than his Beatles stuff, and I think overall his solo career has been pretty amazing.

I always liked Lost In the Shuffle a lot. Except for the line about cars backed up for miles to buy gasoline, the lyrics are just as topical today, especially that line about the CIA!

I do agree with James about the production, though. There are two or three other songs on that LP that deserved better production from Maslin than they got, IMHO.

Yes! The song has fans—give it another spin!

I'm surprised no one has commented on the photo of the Tonight You're Mine cover (not Eric's favorite artwork!) as it displays above. If I can be a little sophomoric, that "play" arrow lands in a funny spot on the pic! lol

PS: About that cover, which I know was cobbled together from different photos (per Eric):

I know I've told the story before, but when the Tonight You're Mine came out, I was a college kid studying journalism, and I got an internship at a small-town newspaper. I pitched a music column to the editor, and he gave me the chance to make it a weekly feature (I called it "Vinyl Views"). When I reviewed Tonight You're Mine, the editor wouldn't use the LP's cover photo—he had the reverse side scanned and used that with my (rave) review.

PS: A good thread on the topic of Tonight You're Mine cover art (started by another poster who came and left pretty quickly, London Stargazer): http://ericcarmen.com/forums/index.php?/topic/30803-ericwhat-were-you-thinking/
