Severance Hall Update

Recommended Posts

Good idea about Eric doing the entire first album. I saw Cheap Trick about 6 or 7 years ago where they did three albums in three nights. The first night they did the first album in order, plus some other songs; second nite was "In Color" plus...; 3rd nite was "Heaven Tonight" plus.... It was great. I can't believe my wife let me out for 3 nights in a row.

Regarding Babs...if she was playing live in my living room, I'd go down to the basement to watch the ballgame.

At first, when I read here that Babs may be playing Oct 6 in Cleveland and Eric is rescheduling, I thought it was understandable. Now I've changed my mind. I say, "On with the show!". As scheduled. How many of us would really be upset if we missed the babs concert because we were at the ec concert? That's right - zero. Eric, your fans want you - you are not competing with babs - she's got her own fans, and there's enough entertainment writers in Cleveland to cover both shows.

Art, but did he sell more than Slim Whitman? That is the big question... smilesmile

And actually, I had planned to head back over to Ukraine/Russia on 10/4, but moved the dates up a couple of day so I could leave CLE the day after the concert. As it turns out, I will have to postpone the trip until 10/12 or so for other reasons.

Hopefully, I can coordinate the concert and the trip so I could do BOTH!!

We brought our Annie back from camp the other day. She said that a friend had commented to her that she deserved a break and she responded that I was the one who actually needed the break. I told her that I was going to go to camp with my friends --- but Barbra Streisand beat me to it!!! I NEED A CONCERT!!!LOL

Sure enough, she's on Ticketmaster with a presale tomorrow for the 10/6 Columbus show. Severance Hall is open!!

With such a big delay is 6 weeks enough time for rehearsals and writing arrangements? Eric?

If so, how would you attack it, what would the timeline be, and how much time would you need with the symphony? Lots or do they just glance at the charts and their good to go? Just curious how the process works.

Eric,

The weekend of Thanksgiving would be a lovely time to perform at Severance Hall. A certain old bandmate and admirer will again be in town and would love to attend.

I've been up here from Miami for Labor Day. Beautiful day today in Cleveland town.

Regards,

Karen

P.S. The Cleveland Orchestra is doing a three-week residency in Miami for the next 10 years starting this January-February at the new Miami Performing Arts Center which opens next month. They tuned the Symphony Hall last month. They're refering to them as "The Best Band in the Land!"

Muzza,

This year Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, 11/23 (it's always the 4th Thursday in Nov). Most companies offer the following day as a holiday (11/24), but not banks, and that contributes to Thanksgiving being the most congested travel weekend in the year.

Canada Thanksgiving (they had it first so it must be mentioned) is the 2nd Monday in October (10/9 this year).

One fact most people don't know is that Thanksgiving was started by President Lincoln in 1863, when the U.S. was in the midst of Civil War.

Bernie

- - - -

"The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful Providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well as the iron and coal as of our precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the imposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the divine purpose, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity, and union.

Abraham Lincoln"

Thanks Annieg and Bernie. It is easy for us here in New Zealand to hear about such special days in other countries and assume we know what they are about. I guess TV and movies have given us some insight but that can often be distorted by the storyline.

Was there any guidance given as to how this day should be celebrated or has that evolved over the years

Muzza,

The Thanksgiving guidance, in short, STUFF YER FACE.

Thanksgiving, like Christmas, is generally goverened by family traditions. Usually the day involves a lot of cooking, football games, eating, and noise. The Thanksgiving meal (standard fare is turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pumpkin pie, etc.) is usually in late afternoon so that one has time to digest it all before bedtime.

It is an important day to families - so much that newlyweds are often torn as to whether to spend the day with his family or hers. Some compromise with Christmas at one set of in-laws, and Thanksgiving with the other, but some couples alternate Thanksgivings with the parents so they can have a stressless Christmas alone!

And don't forget watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on the tube! That's my biggie. smile I'm less fond of crowds as I get older, but I still could be persuaded to attend that someday...right now, I watch it for glimpses of the City and (hopefully) some good performances from shows. I'll be in LA this year, but you can bet we'll be tuned in.
