Paulie Mississippi
How did this sale do, in reference to the length of time to achieve the sell out? Ahead of expectations, behind, or just about there?
HT from Mo
Great question Paulie!HT
Al K
Great question! I think the majority of those either in or working with the band would say that they're VERY happy we sold 300 sets in 3 weeks! While this set is a GREAT value, it wasn't exactly inexpensive. Plus the fact that the presale came during the time of year when money is usually very tight, and we were all very sensitive to insuring the buyer received a great value for the price. As we didn't advertise or promote this set at all outside of the websites we were all cautiously optimistic about how we'd do. So I'd say the consensus is that we sold out ahead of expectations. In fact, we've already had many inquiries about the sets from people who wanted to order but didn't find out about it's availability until it was too late, and I know the band and staff feel very bad for those who didn't order in time. Where we initially thought 300 sets were more than enough to satisfy the demand, now we're thinking we may have been too conservative. LC
No doubt 300 was conservative, Al. I'm certain you'll be getting all kinds of demand for the limited edition as the release date draws near. Having done a lot of editing/writing work in the areas of entertainment and sports collectibles, I totally understand the challenge of coming up with the right number. On one hand, you want the product to have an aura of "rarity" (and hence desirability). On the other hand, you don't want fans who hadn't been in touch with Raspberries goings-on to get shut out. I bet that when the real release date gets here and the national release is creating a buzz, you guys will wish you had made it 400 or 500 limited-edition copies. I know that I was very, very close to buying a 2nd set---just because, I dunno, I wanted an extra one, in case mine is defective, or lost, or stolen, or whatever. (But then I figured, an extra sealed copy in my house will prevent someone with the same Raspberries passion from enjoying it, so I passed. But it's not unlike "hard-core" fans of any artist to buy an "extra" copy of something.) Ultimately, selling out of 300 copies in three weeks is a great story, and it creates some momentum. So.... good going! Congrats to the all the Raspberries and the 'berries team....Best,LC
Maggie Clarke
I am SO bummed out that I missed this sale by ONE DAY! I really wanted to have the DVD. I don't understand, what with today's computers, why anyone would want to limit this to 300 copies and frustrate fans who would want one. I'm upset. Maggie Clarke
Please write me if you'll reconsider extending the offer: mclarke@hunter.cuny.edu
Eric Carmen
I am really pleased that the 300 packages have sold out so quickly. We chose to offer 300, initially, because we really had no idea what the demand for a package like this might be. Jim, Al, Bernie and I met over the weekend to discuss the possibillity of extending the offering so that fans who may have just learned about it are not excluded. We just want to be sure that the fans who bought the first 300 packages aren't upset or disappointed. We want everybody to be happy. Don't be bummed, Maggie. We're working on it. ec
darlene
Thank you, Eric, for considering everyone's feelings like you always do. I can't speak for anyone else, but I would be thrilled if the "limited edition" offer were extended to those who didn't get the chance to purchase it. I remember being heartbroken when tickets to the first reunion concert were sold out while my computer was down. I was fortunate that an absolute *angel* purchased extra tickets and sold them to us so we could attend that breathtaking historic event! That taught me to act on all offers immediately before they're gone.In my view, the more people who purchase the cd/dvd and attend Raspberries concerts, the better. I'm hoping everyone feels that way. --Darlene
Maggie Clarke
Thanks so much Eric! I'm one of these perpetually overwhelmed, overcommitted New Yorkers that can't keep all the balls in the air, so that's why I missed seeing the announcement here before today. You've brought a smile to my face. And I agree with Darlene that anything we can do to get more people to Raspberries concerts and buy the DVD/CD the more who will discover just how great you guys are! I've been talking about the music and the concerts and mentioning the webpage of Raspberries BB Kings photos that I have on my website to friends who are fans of other bands in the hope the reunion can pick up some steam and snowball (if that's not too mixed a metaphor). My hope is this DVD can be parlayed into a PBS special for the band. The Moody Blues got a HUGE boost which lasts to this day from their 1992 Red Rocks show with orchestra. That not only was at the beginning of PBS even airing rock shows, but also set off bands hiring orchestras to play onstage with.
LC
Al/Eric,Geez, I don't think anyone who has pre-ordered one of the initial 300 would fret if you add some "limited edition" inventory. I'm like Darlene --- I'd be happy if more were made available. Because I'd hate to see somebody get shut out when they really, really wanted it, but didn't get an order completed in time.Ideally, everyone who's willing to pay the $125 for what sounds like a perfect package will get one. After all, I wouldn't guess we'll ever, ever see one of these babies pop up in the "Used CDs" bin at Strawberry's or Newbury Comics or anywhere else. Know what I mean? Poor4Life
I would have loved to own one, but the cost was just too outragous for me. I really wish there would have been another edition, say without the autographs. I'm on an extremely limited budget right now, (especially being it right after the holidays).I've been waiting with great anticipation for a DVD of the show, and now all I'll be able to get is a 5-song DVD when it's officially released. I'm really bummed about this...Jeff
raspathens
I say the more of 'em out there the better. It could mean that more people discover this music and the group.
Gene
There is more being offered to the general public than just a 5 song DVD. As for the limited edition set, the more the merrier as far I'm concerned. For me it's not so much the rarity of the item(s) as it is the items. No one has to get the bigger package... great music will come with the CD as well. And lots of photos, I hope!
Lee Marshall
Matters not to me how many you manage to sell Eric. I bought it for the music and the celebration...not to be one of a handful who grabbed the impossible. It seemed actually to be a very low number considering the over-all costs of putting it ALL together. 500, 1,000, 10,000...whatever the demand is...is 100% fine with me.Good luck...you ALL deserve it. LC
I would have loved to own one, but the cost was just too outragous for me. I really wish there would have been another edition, say without the autographs. Jeff When you consider what's in this package, I don't think the word "outrageous" fits at all in terms of price. I mean, geez.... A 21-song CD. A 21-song DVD. Footage from rehearsals and backstage. Interviews and music that didn't make the VH1 Classic show. Music from the 1973 Armed Forces show (which has been available only on bootlegs). Bernie's legendary montage, which a lot of us haven't seen. The autographs and "extras" (per the order page) are icing. To me, the price fits the package. Maybe, if the 'berries makes another batch available, there could be a limited number that are signed, plus a limited number of unsigned copies that would be a little bit cheaper. But either way, I gotta say, this is one of those things where you find a way to buy.... You beg, borrow, and steal! Just kidding about the "steal" part of that, but man, this is an exciting package! Gives us all a little something to look forward to, IMHO.
MAM
The price isn't outrageous at all for what your getting in the package. Heck, I paid $75.00 for my first Beatle bootleg album (Get Back) back in 1970 and all I got was 10 songs.
JohnO
Likewise, I believe the price is quite reasonable, considering what we're getting. I bought 2 copies, but one is for a friend who accompanied me to one of the reunion shows. (I also considered buying a dupicate copy just in case, but if something were to happen to my CDs/DVD, I know where there's another copy to listen to or watch). Bessieboo
I did not buy DVD for its rarity, I bought it to Enjoy and play over and over. Considering what is spent on one nice night on the town, a sporting event, even movie tickets. They are all a one shot deal, when it is over it's over. I intend to revisit the DVD often. If you want to make more, do so.If you feel compelled to make a striped down pkg for less....the more who can enjoy it the better.Even better... Florida is a great place for another reunion! Think..sun, fun, Disney World, Universal, Sea World, Cruise Ships, Bessieboo's House Party- Great Food and Music as long as evil EC stays away from the play list. Leff'tHome
I wouldn't be upset if more packages were offered. I didn't buy it for its rarity but to enjoy the music and the performance. Now that I'm hearing raves about the quality of the package, I'm ecstatic over the fact that I have one! For once, I followed my own advice and started setting aside funds as soon as project was announced. Maybe, if it would make those involved more comfortable, a slightly lesser package could be offered at a slightly reduced cost. I'm just happy I ordered immediately. P.S. Anything else I should be saving for???
Paulie Mississippi
I can't speak for all of us, and do not intend to try. However I think that most of us who quickly coughed up our hard earned moneys would have no problem if the offer were extended. I think that first and foremost is our desire to see the continued and continuing success of RASPBERRIES! And where would the problem be in continuing to offer this or a similar set? If I understand correctly those of us who bought will be getting #/300 editions? What do I care if somebody else gets the same thing for the same money (or even a few bucks less) if it doesn't have that "edition" criteria? Maybe that's just me? I say make all the $$$ you guys can make... and maybe you'll rake in enough to justify a summer of recording new material!
blackhawkpat
As poor as I am, I got mine reserved right away. I've been trying to turn people on to the Raspberries since I was thirteen years old! Why would I want to stop now? Start the presses!
Early Wynn
Hey, sell as many as you can. I would have bought one if you offered 3,000 instead of 300. Hopefully you'll sell enough to go back out and play a few more shows.
Kirk
I hope they make (and sell) all they can. They deserve it! Go for it! Kirk.
