Raspberries: The Clunker List...

Recommended Posts

I guess it's been awhile since I've been exposed to a "worst list" from Raspberries. If Tony had been in Waukesha back in June he would have heard the Who knock off, I Don't Know What I Want. It was fantastic. This is the song that got the band and Starting Over in the top 1974 albums of the year, Rolling Stone magazine(in this case specific mention of the Who). Please let us know what the four worst Who songs are.

anyone who would put "If You Change your Mind" on a clunker list should have their clunking head examined. Wow. It has a great melody, tasteful guitar licks, wonderful chorus and bridge, and is extremely well sung. Excellent execution beginning with a solo voice and one guitar and building to that screaming chorus. what a build up! What does someone expect in a song?? It still sounds like a song today that should have been a very big hit song. I always think of it as one of the 12 cuts, or so, where the Raspberries were perfectly and uniquely themselves. I dig some songs more than others but I dont think theres a clunker on any of the four albums.I love "Might as well" also. Sorta a cross between Dononvan and Badfinger.A real upbeat tune. When I was 12 I wasnt enamored by the jazzy portions of "I can remember" but now I love it except I think they should have played the Jimmy Webb-type jazzy bits with additional force. But they did play these end portions with more force live in NYC. It was awesome.

I have always thought that to write a song in the style of a great group-and one as good as a top 40 single by that group -WAS in fact- a talent."I Don't Know What I Want" is fun and I bet the boys had fun doing it.I love The Who from early to late Who. But their era of 3 minute singles(My Generation,Magic Bus,Pictures of Lily,I Can See For Miles,)all that pre-Tommy stuff, (that I remember were not such big singles in America) have a special place in my heart and for me "IDKWIW" is one more great 3 minute Who British Invasion single. On that note-"If You Change Your Mind"- could have been on "Ram" and Eric's "Oh Yeahs" out Paul- Paul ,and to quote another of my faves-"And That's Alrighte By Me Tonight".Hey even The Beatles wrote Everly Brother songs .I love "Please Please "Me and I don't consider it a ripoff I consider it a classic.

Would it help if I admitted "IYCYM" was my favorite on the Clunker List?

But a great song? You guys must be smoking the weed laced with Darlene's lemonade. <img border="0" alt="[blech!]" title="" src="graemlins/blech.gif" />

I'm sure the live performances will raise the clunkers up to a non-cringing level.

I bet if you ask Eric, It's not one of his favorites.

As for paying homage to the Who...That's OK, but don't rip off an OPENING RIFF while doing it.

As Chandler Bing would say, "Can you BE any less subtle..."

Prior to attending my first Raspberries' concert this summer, I liked "If You Change Your Mind", but it was never a Raspberries' song that I purposely sought out to listen to. However, when traveling home from attending the NY concert this past July, I was shocked when the one song that kept playing in my mind was not "Go All the Way", "Let's Pretend" or any of their other hit records, but "If You Change Your Mind". For weeks on end afterwards, I would intentionally hit the repeat button on my CD player over and over again, just to hear "If You Change Your Mind". I don't know how it had not become one of my favorite Raspberries' songs earlier. From its' calm solo guitar opening to its' building chorus to the screaming desperation, it grabs my attention and moves me emotionally. Tony, after you attend your first Raspberries' concert this month, I would love to hear your opinion on this song, and see "if you change your mind".

I also like the songs "Might As Well" and "Rose Coloured Glasses". Oh well, different strokes for different folks!

If I was FORCED to select one song that I may choose to skip over when playing a Raspberries' album, it would be "Hands On You". However, when I listen to Raspberries' albums, I don't usually hit the skip button.

I've been 'asleep' over here for a month or two but this one woke me up...IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND a BAD song ??$%#@%???

Ok, the repetitive "If you change your mind" and the "Oh yea" are a bit "tatty," (as John Lennon would say) but the rest of it raises the ole goosebumps...Wally's lead guitar lines throughout the song are incredible. I spent lots of time working up those riffs and drove my wife crazy. Those riffs are not simple but unique and cool-as-hell. At NYC, when everyone went nuts to the "crescendo and climax" in the middle of that song, my wife looked at me as if to say "OK, OK, I get it!"

Well said ya Silly Old Bear. I'm not one to hit the skip button either. And even though, I listed "Money Down" as the one I least like, I can't seem to get it out of my head! Lol!

Thank you Julie! Hmmm, maybe you need to listen to "Hands On You" a few times in a row, in order to get "Money Down" out of your head. haha

Jeff

Edit: Wow! I just noticed that this is my 100th post on this message board. The time certainly went by quickly.

Silly Old Bear, this only proves a point I have stated before.....the "B" and "C" grade 'berries songs are, despite what they are, better than a lot of people's "A" list songs.

And(also mentioned before)the "worst" Raspberries tune is still better than the "worst" Beatles, Zeppelin, Elvis or Sinatra song......if you are looking from the "bottom up".
