darlene
There were NO disappointments Friday night! Well, for me, there was one, teeny disappointment. There was a mystery celebrity at the concert who held about as much excitement for me as Raspberries, but in a completely different way...and my chance to meet her may have been lost forever.Bernie told me that Eric's Aunt Muriel, who was a violist FOR 45 YEARS in THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA, (!!!!) was at the performance. I was dying to meet her, but because I am a complete stranger to her, I decided against trying. I asked Bernie if he could introduce me (he had met her three hours before!), but he said she probably wouldn't remember who he was, and I didn't want her to feel uncomfortable about being approached by strangers. I just thought, "Ahhhh...Paradise Lost!" I would have loved to talk to her about working under that old curmudgeon, George Szell, and about the beautiful, lush sound of the Cleveland Orchestra that has always been my favorite. I have records of "Aunt Muriel's" performances!!!! What a thrill it would have been to meet this grand lady! Oh well, I've learned that what Wally said is true: "Never say never..."Aunt Muriel, what are your plans for New Year's Eve?... --Darlene
marvin
Darlene at the "Meet & Greet" I had a wonderful conversations with Aunt Muriel, Eric's son Clayton, and Eric's mom and dad. I'll post the gist of the conversations later.Marvin
darlene
Marvin, You even met AUNT MURIEL????!!!! I'm jealous!!! I should have ATTACHED myself to you! Maybe I wasn't meant to meet her just yet. I got so enraptured talking to Dennis Ferrante, I almost didn't get to thank the band! If I had started talking to Aunt Muriel about string playing, she and I would probably still BE there...I don't think anyone could ever upstage Raspberries in my eyes, but if anyone can, it isn't another band, it's Aunt Muriel. --D
marvin
She was very nice, but it was Eric's mom that I had the nicest chat with. She's going to be putting a bug in Eric's ear very soon. Hint hint!Marvin
darlene
Marvin, Eric reads the message board. I don't think I understand what you're saying. --Darlene
Betsey
I had a wonderful chat with Eric's brother Fred. He is intelligent and charming and very funny. Eric is lucky to have Fred looking out for him! Betsey
marvin
Darlene I mentioned to Eric what his mom said. He replied, "Oh no, I gotta listen to mom."Marvin
Argee
I think Fred was the mayor or something like that of Lyndhurst Ohio a few years back but I may be mistaken. I work with a guy who went to school with Fred. I'll have to ask him when I see him.
mannoman
Betsey, I too had a nice chat with Fred. You are correct. He was intelligent, charming and appeared to have a very strong concern for Eric and looking out for his best interests. I also had a nice conversation with Eric's Mom and Dad. What a great family. darlene
Do tell, Betsey! Oh, I just thought of something...(Betsey's going to smack me!) When I was in high school, my best friend in All State Orchestra was Betsy Dykema, a cellist. Alluding to the "Betsy Wetsy" doll I had as a child, I affectionately called her "Wetsy." --D
Bill C
I've never been a big Michael Stanley guy but someone pointed him out to me saying it was him. Anyone verify?
Betsey
Yes, I was sure I saw Michael Stanley there. And Darlene, yes I will smack you the next time I see you. Betsy Wetsy is something I lived with a LONG time. Leave it to you to bring it back up. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you---maybe next time! Raspbernie
One of my exchanges with Eric's Aunt Muriel:ME: You're Aunt Muriel? Well, thank you so much for introducing Eric to music at such an early age. If it wasn't for you, he wouldn't be playing in front of this packed house today.AUNT MURIEL: He never did like playing the violin!:-)Bernie
darlene
Fie on Eric! He must have really vexed Aunt Muriel...He's lucky *I* wasn't his teacher. If he didn't practice, he'd never get a reward sticker on *his* lesson page! Only kidding.I would have charmed him into continuing by finding out his favorite songs, writing them in manuscript for him and teaching him to play them. I think it's a shame he quit playing the violin, because the piano is such a hard, unyielding instrument, and he plays it with such sensitivity, he would have been a truly extraordinary violinist. I can't imagine the range of colors he could have pulled out of the instrument. Actually, he expresses an almost unlimited range of tonal colors with his voice, so it's about the same thing. I wish I had been his violin teacher, though... --Darlene
