Calling All Musicians

This is my first topic, I usually just read everybody's stuff, however, after meeting some of you in person at the first Cleveland concert, and reading all your posts, I felt a need to try to start this topic. There seems to be a lot of musicians out there! I would like to know what Raspberries songs or (related music) you have done Live or recorded. Is there a way to share this music? I am also in a local band in Minnesota. I have brought to the band "Go all the way". I've been playing in a band for 24 years and have been reluctant to bring a Raspberries song to the band. I view these songs as sacred and am afraid that I would be too much of a perfectionist. However, in the next two weeks I should know how good, or bad we can recreate it. Let me know what you guys and gals have done in the past. Oh by the way my band is the Fanatics. fanaticsworld.com

Bill I think that you'll discover that there's a bunch of musicians here (along with many professional writers), starting with our webmaster himself, Bernie. Check out the thread that was started a while ago about putting together a 'fan's tribute to the 'berries. If you can't locate it, send me an email off-line.

Regards,

Marvin

p.s. Andy and I have been known to sing a few 'berries' songs in hotel rooms. wink

Marvin and I did a live version of "I Want to be With You" may moons ago ...the problem with some of the Berry tues is the pitch....have you tried singin some of them?...The hardest is " Let's Pretend". I believe EC pitched it at "G"...I can sing it in that key, but falsetto would be the way to do it!

I would kill to do "Starting Over" live...

Hi Bill,

Aren't you the guy who bought my GA tickets in November?

In the various bands I've been in, I've performed or recorded: I Wanna Be With You, Drivin' Around, Making It Easy, That's Rock N Roll, I'm A Rocker, Should I Wait, Come Back (Fotomaker), Sweet Lies (Fotomaker), R&R Mama, Boats Against The Current, Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea, Inside Story, Money Down, Almost Paradise, Let's Pretend (ballad version), Party's Over, Give To Ya Easy (Tatoo) Not to say I did them well, but I did them. Some were taped, some weren't.

I never recorded any Berries or EC stuff that I have done...

To be honest, I don't think that it sounded very good way back when anyway!!....LOL...

I recently came across a tape of our band "Thyme", Marvin and I both played guitar and sang...( that band actually had 4 singers!!),way back in 80-81. We sounded pretty bad...rehearsing in my dad's office...

Tonight is a great song! Austin Healey still plays in the area. I saw them recently at a benefit concert we played, they were a couple of bands before us. They are good, they've been together for quite a while, maybe 20 years. My band the Fanatics is more of a cover band, we do a lot of city festivals, corporate parties and stuff. We've decided we're going to put together an CD of originals in the "power pop 70's style", we are all songwriters and studio guys so I think it'll be cool as long as we don't get in each other's way. Do you have any recordings of you doing Tonight?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've loved Raspberries from the very beginning, and though I've never (till now) actually had one of their songs as part of the formal repertoire of any band I'm in, there are party tapes of one of my bands jamming on "I Wanna Be with You" and "Let's Pretend."

But then again, that was back in 1974, when I actually had a prayer of hitting some of those notes! You guys are certainly right about keys -- "Let's Pretend" is one of only two songs they've pitched down in their current incarnation (from G to E).

Speaking of which, I've been in an acoustic duo for the past four years or so with a fellow Berries fan (we were both at the November show), and we've recently started doing "Nobody Knows." My partner, who has a higher voice than I do, sings lead, but nevertheless we've had to pitch it down from G to F!

Great fun to do, though.
