CubbiefanMike
I noticed that alot of the Raspberries songs would fade out and it sounded as if some cool things were developing musically.. I guess my question is are there extended versions of these songs? Or any unreleased songs from these sessions. "I Wanna Be With You" is one example of a song that I would have like to hear without the fade out.
Paulie Mississippi
I remember cranking my stereo up to it's limit to hear the cool guitar work at the end of " HARD TO GET OVER A HEARTBREAK at the end of the first side of SIDE 3 . Though I think I hear the end, it would be cool to have that available as well without the fade.I know some songs end with a climax and some with a fade (kind of reminds me of... no, must remember this is a family friendly forum... )I do agree with Cubbie-fan; when there is a fade sometimes you just want to shout " PLAY ON !" Matthew C. Clark
At the end of the song "Hard To Get Over A Heartbreak", David Smalley laughs & then said "Oh Yeah". You can hear that on "Capitol Collectors Series" (1991) Matt
Matthew C. Clark
That song also is NOT on "Power Pop: Volume 2" either. Matt
mannoman
Great topic CFM.Personally, I prefer a fade out 90% of the time. It leaves the listener wanting more - and wondering: is there more? What am I missing?I first became aware of this in the 50's. One of my favorite songs was "Slippin' and Slidin'..." by Little Richard (I believe it was the B-side to Long Tall Sally). When I bought the album and played that song I was fascinated by the fact the back up band played on for another 30 seconds before the fade. It was an awesome jam session.I am sure radio air play (time) had a lot to do with the length of the final cut and I am just as sure there is a market, today, for the longer versions (if they can be found). Some of the best music is contained in the last 30 seconds of a cut when the musicians are not constrained by having to back the vocal. Raspbernie
Two of the best "fade-outs" of all-time IMO are "All You Need Is Love" and (the mother of all fade-outs) "Hey Jude." I love how Paul sings a bit of "She Loves You" at the end of "All You Need Is Love" and the way he keeps "Hey Jude" interesting by what he improvises on each round!Bernie
Paulie Mississippi
Bernie, I agree whole-heartedly about Hey Jude. It's one of my favorite Beatles songs because of just that!Another song that I really love the fade out on was the old Lobo tune I'd Love You To Want Me when the piano is just rocking and you can barely hear it... and feel like you're missing a concert! Zuke
Hey Bernie,How about the disco drum beat at the very fade of Hey Jude?Zuke
Zuke
...or is that a Polka?
Tony Cartmill
I think the 3 best fade-outs I can remember are:1. "Crying In My Sleep" - Art Garfunkel2. "Love Is All That Matters" - e3. "Pieces Of April" - Dave Loggins (late 70's version)
raspberrywine
other great Fade Outs:Fanny Be Tender- Bee GeesGod Only Knows- Beach BoysTime Waits For No One-StonesWhole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin
Marco57
One of my favorites is the fade on the gold disk version of Harry Nilsson, Without You, the orchestra just keeps on going!Marc
sllvnbil
"Girls Talk' Dave Edmunds. Perhaps the quickest fade out on any record I've heard.
Paul Davie
I kinda thought "Go Now" by The Moody Blues had the quickest fade out of all time. Like three Abbey Road engineers pulling down on the knobs, all at once! And it's also the most over-modulated lead vocal, too. Denny Laine's last "Darlin'...You Better GO NA-A-A-A-OWWWWW" distorts no matter WHAT stereo you play it through. And as for my favorite fade out..."I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home' by Grand Funk. Don_Krider
My favorite Raspberries fade out is at the end of "Let's Pretend" as it appeared on the "Fresh" album --- I always cranked Eric's voice up to hear that part (I've heard "Let's Pretend" on other Raspberries releases where the fade out has been edited out, which drives me nuts).Don
Angloberry
Bernie, Sorry to be picky but surely it's John, not Paul, singing the "She Loves You" bit on the "All You Need is Love" fade out?Gary
Raspbernie
You're right, it was John!Bernie
LC
Those are great fade-outs all, with "Hey Jude," "All You Need Is Love," and "God Only Knows" near the top of my list. Also have to toss in my favorite Beach Boys songs, "Surfer Girl," for the harmonies, and that trademark Brian Wilson quality.... And closer to home, how about "Run Away," from Boats Against the Current? An intense, dramatic, driving way to end that album....
Trindy
Mine is on the 45 version (and I have no idea why it was only on the 45 version, but it was) of "Overnight Sensation." The mix on the 45 version is slightly different and you can really hear Wally going to town on his guitar. It's a shame you never get to hear this version anymore because the version used on all the reissues of Raspberries material has always been the LP mix. seattlesteve
I remember Billy Joel saying back in the day, when they had a new album out and rehearsing for tour, half the rehearsal was trying to figure out "how to end the song". He said so many don't actually have an ending and in concert, they need to end the rascal.
seattlesteve
One more regarding fade outs... Strawberry Fields, and I almost conside Revolution #9 as a song that is almost an entire fade out.
Matthew C. Clark
Well, the same 45 single version of the song "Overnight Sensation" (Hit Record) can be heard on "Capitol Collector's Series" (1991), "Greatest Hits" (1995) & on Eric's "Definitive Collection" (1997). You won't hear it on "Greatest" (2005) because it is the album version!!! Matt
Trindy
Ah, I don't have the first two and it's been a while since I listened to the latter. That would explain it... I'm thinking of "Raspberries' Best" and the RPM CD set.
Marco57
Bernie and Gary,Actually it's both John and Paul with the "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" on All you need is love. Check out this website and look for AYNIL, they've got a whole debate on it. They used to have an oopsed version of it, and you could clearly hear one of them start, then the other join in. Interesting web site! http://www.pootle.demon.co.uk/wgo.htm Marc
