BUT...these tunes do belong is a basket of goodies that includes many of those recorded by the Raspberries. I stayed on 'instruction'...listing only 1 [favourite] song per 'act'. Obviously I have several more for each of them.
JohnO
"I stayed on 'instruction'"Huh??? The topic says "10 favorite songs by bands that influenced the Raspberries"...and the topic's originator posted multiple songs by 3 bands. Where does it say 1 song per band? Lee Marshall
No big thing John...I simply misread it. It wasn't meant as a 'dig' at you...in fact when I started working on my post...your's wasn't even there.
JohnO
Please strike one of the Beatles' songs (You're Gonna Lose That Girl) in my list, and add The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man. Eric said at the Atlantic City show that this record changed his life.
JohnO
Lee - no problema.....that's a very good list you have there, BTW....
Eric Carmen
John O, I'm not even sure I can improve on your list. It's that good! I'll have to really think about it. ec
Eric Carmen
Actually, Hollies 65's list is right on the money, as well. ec
hollies65
I hear the Left Banke AND Zombies influence....I wonder which Eric liked better. Those two bands are very similar [beautiful minor key songs...underrated....short careers]...I think the Zombies had more great songs. JohnO
I don't recall any mention of The Zombies in "Marathon Man", while the Left Banke is brought up several times. (He even mentions that he tried to write a Left Banke-type song - the unreleased "Cindy In The Wind", which sounds like it could have been on the LB's first album). Additionally, Eric covered "Walk Away Renee" on Winter Dreams. I suspect he likes/loves both bands, but I've personally always felt that the Left Banke and their baroque rock were a pretty big influence on his music. I immediately thought "Left Banke" when I heard "Go All The Way" the first time...(as well as Beach Boys and Beatles).
pierson
for Raspberries' sake i'd pick:1. THE BEATLES- Please Please Me2. SMALL FACES- Tin Soldier3. SMALL FACES- Afterglow4. LEFT BANKE- Walk Away Renee5. BEACH BOYS- She Knows Me Too Well6. THE WHO- Can't Explain7. THE BEATLES- I'll Be Back8. HOLLIES- I Can't Let Go9. BEACH BOYS- God Only Knows10. TURTLES- Can I Get To Know You Better
JumpMan
I have to admit that in Eric's version of Walk Away Renee, what really makes the song is the guitar feed back. Anyone else's thoughts? Good list John O.
Raspbernie
Ten songs? How 'bout one? Take a listen to "I'm Only Dreaming" by the Small Faces.Bernie
JohnO
Bernie - I wish Eric would cover a Marriott-Lane song at some point...."I'm Only Dreaming" would do nicely, as would "All Or Nothing", "My Way Of Giving", "My Mind's Eye", "Afterglow", the aforementioned "Tin Soldier", etc.
