Does Eric Have A Computer?

Well, Christmas past and New Years past, I was kind of wondering since the Christmas holidays we had plenty of time to send greetings to everyone.

Most artists that take charge of web sites or have connection to talk with fans, they do come on the

forum and wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

I go on the Susan Jacks forum, she wished everyone a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.

The same with the Fixx.

Steve Miller Band.

Rush did, Neil Diamond had something to say to us all if you clicked on his holiday greeting.

Why not Eric?

At least Bernie did, that was really nice of Bernie.

Eric could of at least said something and if you click on greeting message from Eric, you could hear him talk to us.

What's up with that Bernie?

is Eric all right?

I have to agree with you on that one, I go to some other music sites, as does my son, and the musicians those sites are affiliated with do personally stop by and leave messages every so often for their fans, and not to offend Eric, but from what I see, these are musicians who seem to be very busy touring and recording, and they still find the time to say hello "in person" once in a while... some even have planned chats with the musicians. I think it's great that Eric corresponds with Bernie, and Bernie does a fabulous job with this site, but really, there's no reason in this age of technology that Eric couldn't touch base "in person" a few times a year.

Devil's advocate: I'm not sure Eric ever wanted a website devoted to him. I don't think Eric solicited Bernie to run it. It was started by a fan for fans and Eric has been generous enough to support it in his way and has certainly given Bernie his blessing after he got it under way. Would we like more from Eric? Sure! Are we thankful for what we have? Amen! Kirk.

Good points, Kirk. I'm sure if you go to any of the above-mentioned websites you'll find something that has never been here...an online store. Eric loves the website. He loves his fans. But one thing he has never done is adopted the commercial aspects of the internet like so many of his contemporaries. Now that's both good and bad. Especially when you consider we might be missing the opportunity to get that CD of rarities!

I agree with some of your points, Bernie, but only to a degree. Yes, some of those sites have online stores, Gary Pucketts is a prime example, and his stuff is not cheap! But not all of them have online stores. The one for Zwan is an example of that. And Billy Corgan checks in there pretty frequently.

As far as Eric "not getting into the commercial aspects", well, how could he, really? He comes out with a new cd every decade whether he needs to or not, and for the most part, 75% of the new cd is old songs. And I don't mean that to "badmouth" Eric in any way, if he wants, or doesn't want to record new stuff is his business. But with a core group of fans like he has here, there really isn't all that much stuff to buy if there WAS a store. We all have what's available already.

I know he's busy with his family and all, and that's great, I respect him for having priorities. But I do think it might be nice, since he knows we're all here, and we're loyal fans, if he took 5 minutes 2-3 times a year to type a brief hello to us here. laugh

Interesting and valid points are being made by everyone. Although it would be nice if Eric popped by every now and then, personally all I'd like is if he or his alter-ego Bernie gave us semi-regular updates as to what he is doing music-wise. Again speaking personally, one reason that I keep checking back here is the hope that there will eventually be something real for us to talk about, i.e. new music. Bernie's book is a nice bit to tide us over, but if there is no prospect of new music, the site will eventually lose interest for me.

This thread has raised an interesting question in my head...why is everything about Eric such a mystery? The only thing we know is 'the past'. Despite our dedication and rabid desire for news, we know little-to-nothing of what Eric is doing today or what he has planned for the future. And yet, here we are, day-in day- out..with nothing to show for it (except the kinship of our admiration for his past). Lord knows Bernie is doing more than his share of keeping us posted...unfortunately he has nothing NEW to post (except old demos and a book about Eric's past..which, don't get me wrong, we are grateful for). I guess we need to ask Eric if he ever plans on sharing his current and future lives with us? We're caught in a rock 'n roll time warp and tryin' to find a way out. It's time for Eric to lead the way!! Dave

I know this wasn't the point intended, but I'd LOVE an online store! It would be great to have an EC tee-shirt, sweatshirt, etc....I have always bought a shirt and program from every Ringo concert I have attended, but it figures the year Eric played, they had neither at the venue I saw him at!

Good points, everyone......and especially Bernie's

....it sure makes a bit different when you are doing something you really like. If it was just for the money, I'm sure he would be competing with all the other Britney Spears sites out there!! smilesmile

But there is something that I must also mention..

this does give an artist to find out where the fan base is, and who these people are.

Granted, music stars are generally pre-occupied with other things to be on the internet. But some do occasionally check it out---and they are people which you least expect.

Courtney Love, at least until this recent round of rehabilitation, has sent personal e-mails to fans.

As for Mick Jagger, has has gone by an assumed name and signed into chat rooms on certain Stones-related sites, and eventually contacted fans personally(by phone)and revealed it later on.

So, you never know......

I think there has been a growing conflict with Eric and fame as he gets older. He wants his music to be heard and enjoyed by all. He's bitter over the music business and the lack of certain record sales (Especially "Boats...").

But as he gets older, Eric seems to be more of an INTROVERT personality, and doesn't feel the desire to do the work that it takes to get a new generation, or remind the old one, just how great his music really is. Most of his songs stand up over the years and could be a hit even today with the right artist or Eric just doing a remix. In America, great music can often get a second chance when the right people get exposed to it. Even if the song was written years ago.

If Eric would just have that positive mindset, like those two ABBA dudes who wrote and produced all those fun pop songs and are now re-rolling in fame and fortune 25 years later, and be open to a Eric Carmen Music Appreciation Revival, something good might just happen.

But if he hides up in there in the Carmen Castle, and thinks that shopping (even hustling) his catalog of classic songs is somehow beneath the limited Carmen legacy, his music will only be truly appreciated by his starving EC.com die-hards. frown

Hey Bernie, I could find out how to silk screen, and make a test t-shirt and send it out to you, and you tell me whether it's suitable, ok

I will be gladly to send you the pattern.

I could try it, at least. But I need to get more info on silk screening, I do portraits really well to the exact.

Ask Eric to see if it's Ok

There are about five issues in this thread: personal messages to the website, commercialism/online store, new music, "what's he doing musically" and the privacy issue.

NOBODY wants a tee-shirt more than I do (maybe BERNIE, but even *that's* debatable!). I am always wondering what Eric's doing musically as well. We KNOW what he's doing personally--being a great family man, and just from knowing what I know about Eric, he's doing it as perfectly as he can, the way he likes to do EVERYTHING. But the problem with being famous is that one's family gets dragged into everything, and the smallest event can get untrue things written in tabloids, etc. The privacy issue is a big thing when it comes to family, and Eric is very smart to be cautious. *I* wouldn't want people calling me up or people I didn't know knocking at the door. After what happened on AOL (in the exciting glory days when I wish I had known about the site), you can't blame Eric for being cautious. This website is relatively new, and in the beginning, Eric didn't even know BERNIE, so in this short a time he has really given his blessing to the site and participated to a large degree, considering its newness. Seeing that Bernie is levelheaded, sensitive and a person to be trusted, Eric has given his blessing to the website, and that's not a small thing.

I would LOVE new music, and I'm sure he's working on stuff, but someone who writes/performs at Eric's level won't let anything out about what's been developed until he thinks it's perfect.

Hold on, have patience. I think 2004 is going to be a GREAT year...

Good points Darlene(glad to see you back, incidentally).....it is indeed rare to have an "outsider"(as in having someone that isn't involved in their label or personal manager)running the "official" website. This indeed shows a lot of trust on the part of Eric.

But I will also give credit for Eric having family come first. Too many stars(music, acting, sports, etc)have let things get too way out of control to pay attention to their families.

Brian is way too busy these days to help out on "Summer Dreams." He's finishing his new album, performing and touring with his SMiLE production. On that note, I never thought that I'd live to see the day when he'd be performing music from this album.
