marvin
Speaking of Steve Perry, one of the great rock vocalists I might add, his song "If Only For the Moment" from the "We Are the World" album, is one of my favourites. Does anyone else know the song?Marvin
aggiesjc
I don't know that song by Steve Perry, Marvin. However, speaking of the We Are the World album, do you know if Lindsey Buckingham had anything on it? I think he was involved with that project. marvin
Well Lindsey's not on a song by himself (at least he's not on the soundtrack album), but is one of the background vocalists on the song "We Are the World." I remember when the video first came out and I was trying to pick out all the singers in the ensemble. I thought, "hmm..that looks a lot like Lindsey Buckingham standing next to Dan Ackroyd..wait a second, what the heck is Dan Ackroyd doing there?!!"Marvin
aggiesjc
So, why would Dan Ackroyd have been there? Something to do with the Blues Brothers? Buckingham was easy to spot in a crowd in those days - he'd gone clean-shaven from his hippie-looking days, and his hair was probably taller than anything else in the room, the classic '80s "eraser-head" look!Jennifer
marvin
Yup I always wondered what Dan was doing there as well. Not much of a singer but a decent enough blues harp (harmonica) player.Marvin
KevG
Maybe I should explain my listing of Fogelberg and Gordon Lightfoot. a lot of music I like has a folk/acoustical origin. Gordon Lightfoot is the king of this type of music as far as I am concerned. I listen to all of his material, not just the stuff that received radio airplay. In fact "Sundown" is far from one of my favorites from him.Same with Dan Fogelberg, most people recognize him as Run for the roses, etc., all stuff that got major airplay, but his roots are really with the Eagles, Joe Walsh, etc. as Marvin also mentions. Dan Fogelberg has also gone on record that Gordon Lightfoot is a major influence in his style. I think of Dan Fogelberg and Gordon Lightfoot as "Composers", geniuses actually. I also consider Eric Carmen a composer. I guess I expect more from artists than just bubble gum rifts and lyrics or worse yet, making a career from covering others......I see a lot of the same style in Ari Hest, Howie Day, Matt Nathanson, and Glen Phillips also.Kevin
marvin
Kevin you hit the nail on the head by saying that Dan F is a genius as a composer. I totally agree. If you like that style of music (i.e. folk/acoustic), check out Venice.Marvin
gordharris
KevG, I'm a Gordon Lightfoot fan too, "In My Fashion", and other great songs, are my favourite.I like "Painter Passing Through", Salute"."Endless Wire"I hope Gordon Lightfoot keeps on strong. KevG
Right on guys.....excellent choices of tunes Gordon. I especially enjoyed the little mid-life crisis that Gordon L went through about 18 years ago when he did the "Salute" album and decided he was going to tour with electric guitar, I believe "In my fashion" as on that album....or was it "Shadows....either way Gord rocked the venue where I went and saw the Salute tour. And Marvin, agreed on Dan F, his Netherlands album has the same effect on me as Vivaldi's Four Seasons....goosebumps everytime I listen. his albums were "works" and "movements", not just music.Kevin
Laura
I've enjoyed Dan Fogelberg since I heard his "Souvenirs" album, it was one of his first albums out. The artist who I think had the most potential before he was taken too soon was Jim Croce. That man could rock or sing the most heartbreaking ballads. He was taken way too soon , if he had lived he probably would have continued that way. I still enjoy listening to both of them.
marvin
Laura I totally agree with your comments on Jim Croce. His output the short time he was around was phenomenal. Have you ever heard his son AJ Croce? I've seen him live a couple of times, and have all 4 of his cd's. He is an incredible pianoist, with a voice right out of a smoke-filled bar. His music is worth a listen for those of you who are unaware, and I am sure that Jim smiles down everyday on his prodigy. If anyone is interested in hearing AJ's stuff, let me know, but be forewarned: He's nothing like his dad.Marvin
aggiesjc
Marvin, I was completely unaware of Jim Croce's son. How did you first hear of him? Also, what is so different from him dad's music?
marvin
Jennifer I love turning people on to new or unknown artists that I believe deserve recognition. AJ Croce is one of these artists. A few years ago in Montreal,AJ played the jazz festival there. A friend of mine went to see the first of AJ's two shows and raved about the performance. I went the next night and was totally blown away. AJ played a jazz/New Orelans styled music, with two other musicians: a stand-up bassist and a drummer. In this type of setting, his musicianship really stood out. The next day I picked up AJ's first self-titled cd. The following year he played the festival again, touring on the strength of his 2nd disc, "That's Me In the Bar." Once again his performance blew me away. Since then, he's released two more discs, "Fit to Serve" and "Transit." His music ranges from soulful Pop,to Jazz, to Rock. His latest disc "Transit" is my favourite. AJ looks exactly like his dad (without the moustache), but sounds nothing like him. Check out his website if you want more info(www.ajcroce.com) or if you want to hear clips.Marvin
aggiesjc
Marvin, I went to the AJ Croce web page, and read his bio. He was only two years old when his father died, and apparently, he has only partial vision. It's nice to see that he's overcome those setbacks and seems to be thriving with four albums. Unfortunately, I was unable to listen to the clips ... have to keep trying.
marvin
Jennifer I had no idea about AJ's vision problems although I have noticed that recently he's begun wearing glasses. On his site, I believe that the only songs that are accessible are those off the "Transit" album.Marvin
Tony Cartmill
AJ Croce is well known here in San Diego because he and his mom have had the popular Croce's club in Downtown San Diego for years. AJ performs there often, although I have never seen him live.I still think San Diego is his home base. I know his mom (Jim's wife) is well known for organizing fundraisers and keeping Jim and AJ's music and memories alive. They moved here just a few months before Jim's last tour, and the family never left. I wish Jim would have made different travel plans...He had just hit the big time. Tony Cartmill
As for Dan Fogelberg, His double album, "The Innocent Age" is still one of my favorite CDs of all time. Dan was at his creative peak on that album. He had to take some time off during the recording because he hurt his vocal chords. But it gave him time to remix and polish each song to near perfection. Even though he had several hits from that double CD, my two favorite songs of Dan's were non-hits from that creation. "The Reach" and "In The Passage" are two songs I never get tired of. Pure Pop Heaven! Go get "The Innocent Age" double CD if you don't have it already...NOW!
marvin
Tony did you see my comments on "The Innocent Age"? We agree! We agree! We agree! "The Reach" is a masterpiece, though I certainly wouldn't classify it as 'pop.'Check out AJ live if you can. He's a great performer and very, very talented.Marvin
Laura
Thanks Marvin! I think that I've seen AJ briefly somewhere along the line. I'll have to check his music out.
aggiesjc
Still getting used to the Trash Can Sinatras CD I originally bought for one song, "Hayfever," and am liking the whole album, I've Seen Everything, more and more all the time. Anybody else familiar with this group?
KevG
Marvin and Tony,I don't see any mention of Dan Fogelberg's "Netherlands" album in your comments. Tony, given the songs you like on The Innocent Age , which incidently I agree is a masterpiece in it's own right, a lot of the style for songs like In the Passage and Sand and Foam, started with Netherlands. His first two works, Home free and Souvenirs, were great however they reflected his Jackson Browne.....Eagles, Joe Walsh, Electra Asylum connections and style, in fact I believe that Joe Walsh played and produced on Souvenirs, but Netherlands was the next album and it marked the first time that his creative side really started to show. You guys really need to take a moment and check out Netherlands....turn the lights out, crank it up and relax, it is classic.Warning..you either like it or you don't...it's that kind of stuff....the good part is that means you can grab a copy at most any used CD shop for next to nothing....Given your previous comments I'm banking on the fact that you will play it and often....Kevin
Tony Cartmill
Kevin, I will look for it. Though I have his multi disc anthology, I will see what songs are missing. I didn't care for the Souveniers album. Is that the one that has "Part of the Plan" on it?
Kirk
Tony--You'll like "Netherlands". My copy has a pretty deep groove in it--Kirk.

aggiesjc
Yes, Pierson, I've been to their site. There are some great live versions of their songs there, particularly a live "Hayfever" that I enjoy as much as the album version. It would be fun to see them in concert!
