seattlesteve
Today AOL on their opening splash page on the entertainment tab has tapped Blenders list of the 111 Wussiest songs ever. All By Myself " Came in at #16. I wouldn't worry too much about the integrity of the list though, they also had a list of the top 25 wimpiest singers, and McCartney came in at 16.Pretty dumb lists, even Clapton had an entry. There's a lot of gold records and Hall of Famers on the list. It's nice to know you're famous enough to even be considered. I think the kids at Blender are punishing anyone woh has put out a ballad. AnniekNY
Clearly, Blender is using sensational, intriguing headlines to sell papers and attract readers.
seattlesteve
Here's what they said about Eric...16. 'All By Myself'"Eric Carmen (1976)Carmen's Raspberries were one of the power-pop firecrackers of the '70s. Going solo evidently sucked all the spark out of the poor shlub. This one gets the nod over 'Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,' another all-time pity party: It came first and charted higher."Here's the editors notes:"Editor's Note: This list was compiled by real-live wusses (and some who have actually dated wusses) from Los Angeles (Bread country) to Dublin (land of Gilbert O'Sullivan). Our panel of wussperts limited the selections to songs from -- and relevant to -- the rock 'n' roll era: no '40s crooners, no show tunes, no Anne Murray. When compiling, we picked one selection to represent each artist: If you want 15 Barry Manilow numbers, please buy his greatest hits. Most importantly, the songs were selected for their inherent wussness, regardless of quality. Some are loathed, some are cherished (doh, we forgot 'Cherish'!) . . . all are wussy."I noticed,Top wus song was R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People", followed by Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch", MJ's "Ben", James Blunt-"You're Beautiful", Poison-Every Rose Has A Thorn", and Fogelberg's Longer.Debbie Boone charted at 22. Really weird selection. Katrina and the Waves came in at #30 for "Walking on Sunshine" which I (and many ad agencies) apparently think it's an upbeat rocker. Some belong, I don't party to Muskrat Love, or Light Up MY Life, but look at some of these other choices and artists on the list... Don't worry EC, Clapton went down for "Wonderful Tonight", Bruce took a dive for Dancing In The Dark", McCartney-Silly Love Songs (wasn't that inspired by a John Lennon comment), Billy Joel-"Just The Way You Are" and many more.Lot's of gold records. That's some pretty fine, talented, and affluent "wus" company.I have never heard two words in the same sentance before, Springsteen and wus. Tony Cartmill
I'd put Paris Hilton's new single on there. everything from her voice to the mix is wussy sounding.
Julie
Was "Say You, Say Me" ("Gag you, Gag me") by Lional Ritchie on the list?? I just don't get that song and would put it right near the top of a "wussie" list! Sorry if I offended anyone. I do like other L.R. songs--just have a real gag-reflex when I hear that one!--Julie
JohnO
While I'm not crazy about the word "wussy", I must confess that I usually change the radio station if I run into most of those songs playing, as they do induce the gag reflex.....BUT that's not to say that most of the songs on the list weren't wildly popular, aren't at the very least well-crafted, or didn't sell a ton of records...so the artistes in question were certainly doing something right. As in the case of most of these music lists, I believe they only allowed one song per artist...regarding Lionel Ritchie, I think they tossed "Hello" on this list. Likewise, Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" beat out "Tears In Heaven", "Lay Down Sally", and others, which could have made this list, IMO.....and that's not taking away from most of his pre-solo output, which I mostly love.Ditto McCartney - Hell, dozens of his solo 45's could have made this list. (My Love, Hi Hi Hi, Ebony & Ivory, etc.). I doubt there are many who've had careers as long as Macca or Slowhand who haven't put out the occasional ballad that fits this category...... seattlesteve
You're right, an artist was only allowed to be on the list once. Lionel got on for Hello. Even Kiss made the list with Beth.Any major artist that's been around for awhile, punched out hit singles, and has range, and diversity, is going to have a ballad, and be on the list. Their all there. Even the Beatles (WI64)Just because Kiss and Air Supply made the list, they doesn't make them wus equals.Remeber this was their wus SONG LIST, they also the top 25 all-time wimp Artists. EC wasn't on that list, not with his music catalogue.
Tony Cartmill
Oooh, I would like to see that list.Julie's right about "Say You Say Me."Lionel Ritchie would get my vote for the ******** of wuss lyrics with "Say You, Say Me" "Lady" and "3 Times A Lady". Although, I did like the latter song when it was covered by Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat. The censored word is one more than a dual-fecta. Tony Cartmill
And James Blunt? I heard him do another song on The Today Show other than that cringe-inducing "Your Beautiful", and I wanted to pull an Elvis and shoot the TV. What do people see in that English Twit? Or shall I say Wuss-Twit?...
TheScentLady
Was "Say You, Say Me" ("Gag you, Gag me") by Lional Ritchie on the list?? LOVE your new title for that song! It's high on my gagometer as well.

Who can forget those moving lyrics, "you're unce, tice, fee times a mady." Or "wookin' pah nub.." "Buh-weet Sings" is a MUST for any record collector. Guest
I just love how people with no talent are so outspoken about someone who has clearly written an all time classic song in both ABM & NGFILA.Sit that moron down at the piano with an empty sheet of paper and see qwhat he comes up with. Its very easy to analyze something thats been written however, writing "something good" from nothing is very difficult

seattlesteve
They talked about ABM and NGFILA and if they had half a pulse on the music scene back then they would have talked about Boats. Boats is the ultimate ballad and unless you were one of the 162 people that saw Eric sing it live at the HOF a few years ago, you wouldn't get it. It was more moving and rocked more than GAW. I'm not sure EC realizes it, I've seen everybody, and EC doing boats was my concert career highlight. 2 close seconds was EC and the 'dubs doing Make Me Lose Control, and the opening Chords of IWBWY at the very first 'berries concert Thanksgiving weeekend in Cleveland, right after Bernie's montage. JohnO
Yeah, I hadn't noticed the James Finlayson avatar until this morning.....he's the all-time best at the "slow burn" - getting so mad that it looks like his head's going to explode..... JohnO
"They talked about ABM and NGFILA and if they had half a pulse on the music scene back then they would have talked about Boats."Hey, wait a minute....not to be argumentative, but....we're b*tching here because this guy/girl called ABM and NGFILA "wussy", but now we're pissed because he also didn't mention "Boats"? He was NOT exactly complimentary to ABM or NGFILA......P.S. No, I don't personally believe or think that any of those 3 songs are "wussy"....but if someone else does - who cares? seattlesteve
Good point JohnO. My point was they picked off the easy planes on Eric, and he flies under the radar on so many great songs. My ultimate, to be on a bar stool with about 6-8 others on the basck side of EC's grand piano, and have our own persosnal storytellers gig.And of course a coaster so I don't put a ring on that pretty black piano. It wouldn't get any better than that. Who is with me on this...
chris hess
count me in on that!!! imagine getting a chance to even sing with eric..now that would be the best!!!lol, chris
