boats album

I like Boats but you can tell the difference in production between Eric's first album and boats. I liked the sound much better on Eric's first album. I can't really put my finger on everything that's different but the first album sounded more "Live" than boats did.

I gave up trying to say which my favorite EC album is a long time ago. I came to realize that each album has such a different personality, that trying to compare them is like trying to compare them to the Raspberries albums. Boats is definitely the most serious toned album and I love it, but I have to admit that I love all of them. Yes even Change Of Heart. While Boats consists of deep lyrics and complicated arrangments, COH is more about catchy melody and lively beat. It doesn't get much respect but it is the only EC album that I don't skip a song while playing. If you want to see the artist and true brilliance of Eric Carmen, listen to Boats. If you want to feel good, and be entertained by songs with a hook, listen to Heart.

COH was Eric's "anti-Boats" I think. After the hassle and bs he went through with Clive and seeing the LP tank on the charts, he has stated that in essence COH was just giving Clive what Clive thought he wanted... catchy and infectuous pop without any major substance. True, a couple of the songs are deeper than most on the LP, but by and large COH was, imho, the one album that Eric kind of said "What the #$&*, I'll just throw something out there to shut Clive up!"

Probably if we could see the numbers, where Boats was such a monumental cost to Arista to produce, COH was probably the least expensive of Eric's albums to produce... particularily since I think two of the songs had already been recorded in the Boats sessions, Someday and Hey Deanie.

Yes, thats a theme thats really implicit in Marathon Man also. That when big bucks are spent and not recouped, as an artist, you can lose some your leverage and place yourself in a much more vulnerable position. Its a common story and an interesting one. There are reasons from a business standpoint also that the Beatles, for example, were able to evolve into Rubber Soul and Revolver. Ofcourse as brilliant artists they wanted to explore and get to that point, but their tremendous success, which also translates into $, gave them, or should I say earned them, the leverage to do as they pleased. Theres a history of great pop musicians who wanted to explore something deeper and more meaningful that ran into trouble with those controling the purse strings. The whole "Boats" , "Change of Heart" period really smacks of some of these issues.

I agree, and the beauty of it is when he slams the industry in "Desperate Fools", as the last tune. "I guess I'm just one, in a town full of deperate fools" and "I'm startin' to be what they want me to be and I wonder sometimes, what's becoming of me?" Brilliant!

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy… How many times do I have to go through this. I guess one more time.

If that were true and the only guidelines my post would still be there and darlene's 03/03/06 2:29am post would be the one deleted (see below)

Bahoo, You seem to have one subject when you address me--harping on a completely false picture of what I think of Eric. I *know* he's "a mere mortal," a human being. You're barking up the wrong tree on this one. I'm not at all star-struck by celebrities, (except for Robert Wagner and Paul Newman, and, possibly, the Beatles), because I see them as regular people.

When it comes to Eric's talent, perhaps it's my classical background that recognizes his superb (even "mere mortals" can do "superb" work) musical talent. I never said he's "superhuman" or is not subject to the faults of "mere mortals."

But in my eyes, I recognize a musical talent beyond that of *most* "mere mortals." And, while I may be a "mere mortal" in many areas, I am extremely talented when it comes to music. I was accepted to Juilliard when I was young, but even that doesn't define my knowledge of music. My earliest (meticulous) musical training by an eastern European teacher who had the highest standards any human could possibly have does.

That said, you're *really* harping out of left field on my two posts in this thread, because I didn't even *address* Eric's musical talent--I merely said that in my opinion the Boats album is among his finest work. Period. My posts talked about record labels and how *I* would choose one, were I a pop artist (which I'm not!)

I find it odd that you never attack any male posters on this board who praise Eric far more than I. What's up with *that*?

You don't find this post inaccurate, hateful or harassing?

Darlene is defending herself while your post that was deleted was drafted simply to inflame. I'm sure you can see the difference.

Speaking of hatred, I hated to see Robert Wagner mentioned in the same sentence as the Beatles and Eric Carmen. ( Now Natalie Wood would have been alright.) Mentioning Robert Wagner was the most disturbing thing about the post. I dont see the hatred and untruthfulness yet this post raises alot of questions like whose this teacher from Eastern Europe? Was he hanging around at Julliard, or did she meet in him in Eastern Europe? Its all quite nebulous and somewhat nefarious. Wahy is the European country not mentioned and how did Tommy Tunes get involved?

Was Tommy actually at Juliard or was he just hanging out with Robert Wagner? I really cant follow it.

Raspberrywine...I think you had a drop too many....re-read Darlene's post again...better yet, let me explain it to you:

Darlene and Tommy met a young Robert Wagner, who has the highest of human standards possible ( ya gotta admire his chiseled features) at Julliard and unfortunately Paul Newman was teaching the Beatles when Ringo said, " Eric Carmen played in my band"!!!...then all heck ( no profanity on this board) broke loose and I got into a major kerfuffle for attacking the Clairol Queen...but I had it coming, I have a big mouth...I took one on the chin...and it was Tommy Tunes who decked me because Robert Wagner made one of his patented "Hart to Hart" moves by ducking his blow just in time......

Bernie watched the whole affair and re-itterated " Children, children...stop this nonsense before someone loses an eye"

Since I'm blonde, I think "Clairol Queen" suits me even better than "Lemonade Girl," unless you want to call me the Lemonade Girl Clairol Queen. I confess, I'm bleached! smile

Now, kerfuffle is a GREAT word! It's the best thing I've heard out of Bahoo since he told me not to "get my knickers in a knot," a phrase which I highly prize and have used myself several times since he said it. (See, Bahoo, I'm quoting you!)

I would love to meet Robert Wagner *anywhere,* foreign country, Eastern Europe, Juilliard or Cheboygan, Wisconsin. I'm sure I'd get all kerfuffled. Kerfuffle--what a GREAT word! I can't wait to use it--but what does it mean?!

smile --Love, Dar

PS I see you are signing your posts "Bahooey." You like it?! It was meant *very* affectionately.

PPS I just saw on the news tonight that by the year 2022, blondes will be *extinct"! No kidding. They were a mutation, and the mutated gene is becoming extinguished. The newscaster said the last blonde on earth will probably be born in Finland almost two hundred years from now. After that, we'll *all* be Clairol Queens! frown

This is nice. Everybody getting along so well. To quote Andrew Clay "It's a beautiful thing." Maybe tomorrow's "TOMMY'S Name That TUNE" will be What the World Needs Now (Is Love Sweet Love)/ Burt Bacharach, OR Love Can Make You Happy / Mercy OR Put A Little Love In Your Heart / Jackie DeShannon OR All We Are Saying (Is Give Peace A Chance)/ Plastic Ono Band OR...Ah! Who am I kidding, It'll probably be Kill The Poor by the Dead Kennedys.

Peace brothers and sisters.
