Great article in the current Newsweek by Fareed Zakaria. It is called "Secret of His Success". Here is an piece of it: Conservative commentators have made much of a recent Pew survey showing that public reaction to Obama has been more polarized than to any previous president: Democrats really like him, and Republicans really dislike him. But the poll's most striking statistic was how few Americans now self-identify as Republicans. For the past year it has hovered around 24 percent, the lowest in three decades. It's not so much that the Republican base has shrunk, as Emory University political scientist Alan Abramowitz points out in a recent essay: the Democratic base has expanded. When Bill Clinton was elected in 1992, the Democratic base was 30 percent of the electorate; swing voters were 43 percent and Republicans 27 percent. Last year Democrats made up 41 percent; swing voters dropped to 32 percent and Republicans stayed put at 27 percent. Because party loyalties tend not to shift quickly, an 11-point rise for the Democrats is astonishing. Abramowitz argues that since these changes are largely rooted in demography—particularly the growing nonwhite population—they are likely to persist for a while. It's not only that Obama has inherited a more liberal country. How true this is. Not that many months ago we had Rush Limbaugh bragging about being able to make visits to the Oval Office. That is now history thankfully. You also have a very good sign in that Sen. Arlen Specter is now a Democrat and the Dems are getting close to the Filbuster proof Senate. The word "prgressive" is no longer taken the way it was in the past with certain members of the media constantly trying to trash anyone who dare followed a progressive agenda. The GOP has basically become a party of very littel identity which is sad. Fewer and fewer citizens identify with what the party has turned itself over to recently which are the Fundamentals and Christian Right. I am a practicing Christian and have been all my life but I do not agree with most of the twisted beliefs of these individuals. Thankfully things have changed and we have a President that can read those changes and knows how to effectively work his way through it for the betterement of all citizens.
