Eric/Celine/Ambivalence

For the 1,00,000th time I read about "All By Myself" by Celine Dione being some female celebrity's favorite..."I got the blues...and I'm gonna indulge myself" song.

I get it..Eric made a FORTUNE on Celine Dione's version...

If I'm not mistaken...She was THE biggest singer in the world when she released it back when albums by superstars sold millions...

Still.. If it was me..(I have no idea how Eric feels...perhaps he's more pragmatic than me)..I'd have mixed feelings...'cause Eric did the definitive version..

Anyhoo..the best record I ever heard about the dilemma OF GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS was this Sam the Sham lost hit...Enjoy...Ira..

Ira,

We are in agreement....

1.  Not a Celine fan in the first place

2.  EC is like they said about Porsche in Risky Business....there is no substitute

Ditto Susie...not a Celine fan. She has zero charisma as a performer. Powerful voice, unappealing style of singing, in my opinion.

While Celine is not at the top of my list of singers to listen to, I get hooked on some of her song selections because of the lyrics and mood of the song.  My favorite Celine Dion song is what I consider to be cleverly done lyrically ---

"It's All Coming Back To Me"

There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed
If I just listened to it
Right outside the window

There were days when the sun was so cruel
That all the tears turned to dust
And I just knew my eyes were
Drying up forever (forever)

I finished crying in the instant that you left
And I can't remember where or when or how
And I banished every memory you and I had ever made

But when you touch me like this
And when you hold me like that
I just have to admit
That it's all coming back to me
When I touch you like this
When I hold you like that
It's so hard to believe but
It's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things I'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than any laws allowed
Baby Baby

If I kiss you like this
And if you whisper like that
It was lost long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you want me like this
And if you need me like that
It was dead long ago
But it's all coming back to me
It's so hard to resist
And it's all coming back to me
I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now

But it's all coming back

There were those empty threats and hollow lies
That whenever you'd try to hurt me
I'd just hurt you even worse and so much deeper
There were hours that just went on for days
When alone at last we'd count up all the chances
That were lost to us forever (forever)

But you were history with the slamming of the door
And I made myself so strong again somehow
And I never wasted any of my time on you since then

But if I touch you like this
And if you kiss me like that
It was so long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you touch me like this
And if I kiss you like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things we'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than all your lousy love
Baby, Baby, Baby

When you touch me like this
And when you hold me like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
And when I see you like that
Then we see what we want to see
All coming back to me
The flesh and the fantasies
All coming back to me
I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now

If you forgive me all this
If I forgive you all that
We forgive and forget
And it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
When I see you like that
We see just what we want to see
All coming back to me
The flesh and the fantasies
All coming back to me
I can barely recall
But its all coming back to me now

And when you kiss me like this
(It's all coming back to me now)
And when I touch you like that
(It's all coming back to me now)
and If you do it like this
(It's all coming back to me now)
And if we ...

There are no "in your face" or "graphically crude detailed" lyrics to suffer through.  The inuendo and suggestiveness of the lyrics let your mind perceive the scenario.  Perhaps another artist could have done a better job of singing this song, I would have to consider for a bit whom I would care to have a go at it.  I think Ms. Dion is similar to Barbra Streisand or Cher, in that fans either love them or hate them, there doesn't seem to be much in the middle ground.  When you watch the video they did to go with this song (personally, I think the story could have been better portrayed in better visual representation) you get the general idea of what the song is supposed to be about, remembering the very good physical part of a very bad relationship after one of them has died.  This is cleverly done in the way the lyricist chose to convey the message.

Celine Dion's style of singing is more than a little affected by the French speaking side of her (her primary language?), so much so that you can hear in it the enunciation and diction of her singing the words to any song.  This may be part of what some may find as an unappealing style.  This became more pronounced as she gained confidence in her singing and got favorable responses from a very large international audience as well as a U.S. one.

She definitely has good taste in song selections whether you care for her singing or not, in my opinion --- she wanted to do "All By Myself", didn't she?  But I still prefer Mr. Carmen's version to hers, hers being a little too over-dramatic for my taste, making me less sympathetic to the person singing the song.  Mr. Carmen's version elicited sympathy, whereas Ms. Dion's made me think more in terms of "pathetic" about the character she portrays singing the song.

Getting a little too deep --- Hey Batman, give me a hand up out of the deep end, will ya?  I think I waded a little too far out into the water . . .  ^_^

I would always prefer to listen to a singer with an average voice who can really sing well than one with a great voice who can't(like Celine). The ones who have both(like Eric) are extremely rare.

It's nice to know I'm not "All By Myself" when it comes to NOT liking Celine Dion's version of All By Myself. I think she totally misses the point about it being a "Lament"  and should be sung accordingly.

Young boy, Eric Carmen....:P

Pretty horrible interpretation by Ole Blue Eyes.

You know... where is Perry Como when you need him?

Sorry, Ira.  I am NOT A FAN of Sinatra . . . . didn't even have to listen to the video to KNOW it would not be good.  And I agree, Celine does manage to beat any type of version Sinatra would come up with.  Flattering to Mr. Carmen, though, that even an industry icon like Sinatra thought enough about the song to want to do it.  ( But ---- EEESSHH!!! Just the thought of Sinatra doing it makes me CRINGE  )

No substitute at all for Mr. Eric Carmen --- period.  ;)  Sinatra doing Eric Carmen songs is like Pat Boone doing Little Richard songs --- OH PUH-LEEZE!!!  Yuk!
