Open Letter To Marvin

Referring back to Adventurine's post about "oppressing other's views," all I can say is I have never been one to do that. I have the ability to "delete" a post, if I don't like it, but you will notice I've never deleted any of Marvin's posts.

If I really wanted to be the "Kim Jong-il" ( something Kay once said about me ) of EC.com, I could delete anything I didn't like!

Obviously, that has never been my intention. 

And let me say, ONE LAST TIME, Wally was NEVER a "co-writer" of "Go All The Way." Hell, according to his own words in the Shindig magazine interview, he doesn't even LIKE the song! Just the intro, "right up until the vocal starts."

His whole case, for the past 42 years, was based on a typo, on the back cover of the first Raspberries album, that erroneously credited ( Carmen/ Bryson ) as the writer(s) of the song. When you remove the album from the sleeve, and look at the label, the writer credit under "Go All The Way" says ( E. Carmen ). Once a song is submitted to The Library Of Congress, for copyright purposes, IT CAN NEVER BE ALTERED! PERIOD! "Go All The Way" is, and always was, my song. End of story. 

I'll tell you one more story.

One day, back in late 1972 or early 1973, I walked into rehearsal, and Wally, Dave and Jim said they had "taken a vote" and "decided" that Raspberries publishing royalties should be split up evenly, among the four of us. The way things work, in the world of songwriting, is that the writer and the publisher split each dollar of income 50/50. We had a publishing deal with CAM, so the publisher was already taking 2/3 of the 50% of publishing revenue. The remaining 1/3 went to whoever wrote the song.

I reminded my band members that, the last time I looked, America had not become a "Socialist" nation, and that it was only fair that the person who does the work reaps the rewards. Splitting the publishing "evenly" among the four band members would have served as a disincentive for the other guys to write great songs. I said "No,"and if they had chosen to force the issue, I would have quit the band right then. John and Paul would have quit The Beatles, too! And Henley and Frey would have quit

The Eagles. One of the best motivators in the USA has ( at least, up until now ) always been the idea that if you work hard, and do something well, you will be compensated for it. Take that away, and we're back in The Soviet Union, in the 1950's.

Gosh, I guess in the best of perfect circumstances, new artists coming into the music business need to have some kinda course class on what to expect it to be like.  If they knew up front, I wonder how many would quietly stand their ground and respectfully request that the powers that be treat them with their due respect, and in all fairness pay them accordingly for their creative efforts??

Is there anything out their that helps the ones starting out to understand any of this with some balance and clarity??? :)

Think Eric has some stories about when he stood up to Clive...

Perhaps Eric's book can give others some insights into the music business, in addition to being a tale of thrilling adventures.    :)

Well, damn, that was rich — considering they didn't write them. Sheesh.

How can I get a piece of that action? You know, since I didn't write them, either.

Yeah, Cayennegirl, Trial by Fire has been around too long for many things --- something needs to change for the better.

It is good to have managers and agents, but you should be able to check on all aspects at any moment without fear they are skimming your funds or hiding stuff from you.

Too many entertainment industry stories about many types of artists being robbed blindly by those who are supposed to be doing an honest job for their client and helping them, not cheating them.

It's kinda like "those who can't cheat those who can".

Learning some things and enjoying these posts  (...and great to be back on here).   I want to chime in to the songwriter's credit thing with just one (of many) examples.  Let's look at 10cc's "I'm Not In Love."  This is a Stewart/Gouldman song that was MADE by Kevin Godley's idea of building up a wall of voices. Did he get songwriting credit? Even for this?  No.  This is what a band does for each other.

Mike C, I like your previous post regarding Wally. If he (or others in the group's first incarnation) were able to create a hit, this might be a moot issue.  One of my favorite Raspberries songs is "Don't Want to Say Goodbye."  A wonderful lyric by Wally and the song that turned me on to Raspberries in the first place.  Too bad it did not get higher on the charts, but it is tops on MY chart.

Yes Godd, the one thing those Beatles did was to affect PEOPLES' MINDS. Maybe you need another fix?

Somebody played me your rock and roll pussy song, but I never noticed anything. i think that the real reason you're mad at me is cause I didn't know who you were at the Rainbow (L.A.) Remember that time you came in with Wolfman Jack? When I found out later, I was cursing cause I wanted to tell you how good you were. (I'd heard you on the radio.)
