Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

you're kidding, right????

I mean, I love the Raspberries, but... the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?

My guess is there are about 50,000 more deserving entrants that haven't gotten in yet.

Hell, I mentioned Todd Rundgren to one of the voting members and got laughed all the way back to Studio City...

You know Marc, you have a right to your opinion and that's fine. But did you run it through the "common sense" filter before you posted your opinion here? Come on - you really didn't HAVE to post it, did ya? A little couth goes a long way.

Wendy

PS: I still LOVE "Make Me Lose Control." heartpump

'To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'-Newton's Third Law of Motion

I admit, I read Marc's post and 'reacted' passionately in defense of our beloved "Raspberries", I could not help but become defensive due to the nature of his post. Sometimes I just 'react', rather than pausing for a moment, taking a deep breath and THEN proceeding to engage brain ahead of mouth. So please fellow board members forgive my initial response and chalk it up to passionate emotion being rubbed a lil too raw.

I really like how Wendy expressed her opinions/feelings about 'couth';perhaps, had I taken that deep breath, I would have simply stated to Marc-'didn't your mother ever tell you that if you have nothing nice to say, it's better to say nothing at all.' So once again, Marc and fellow board members, please forgive my initial passionate reaction as I NEVER meant it to be perceived as 'personal or vindictive'...more hurt and reactionary that someone could feel that way on this, of all boards.

There is no need to be sorry Vera. I chose not to post because I knew I wouldn't be selective in my choice of words. You pretty much said what I and few others would have said.

Wow...you're not much of a guesser are you ?

While I do agree that there are quite a few groups that deserve to get in before The Raspberries, that does not diminish the fact that they belong there too. Maybe if the Rock Hall would get their heads out of their asses, all the deserving ROCK & ROLL artists would get in.

With that being said, I would hope you simply exaggerated for shock value, and not out of ignorance. Either way, I agree with Wendy, you showed no couth.

BTW...I was #23

For everyone keeping score: "Flaming is the act of posting messages usually to a message boards that are purposely hostile and derogative. Such messages are called flames. A Flamer is someone who intentionally flames."

While there aren't actually "50,000" more deserving inductees into the Hall of Fame, I'd support Marc's point that Rundgren deserves induction before the 'berries, as do the Hollies.

What Marc meant to say was that the crowd in attendance for the Raspberries House of Blues concert was estimated at 50,000

Well Vera, you said what I wanted to say! And I agree with the whole 'To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.' I read Marc's post, it upset me and then I decided to just go with the old...did you really have to say it?

I thought about the time I was all dressed up, feeling pretty and getting the compliments one loves to hear, then being told by ONE person, "Hey I think you look great...did you ever think about getting your overbite fixed?" I plummeted and I focused on it all night long. I know I have an overbite, no one has to freaking tell me that...but all the "compliment" was, was a leeway to insult me. "I mean, I love the Raspberries, but...the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?" See what I mean? Sometimes one just doesn't HAVE to say anything. Think it...don't say it. It could actually be hurtful and NEWSFLASH...the band HAS feelings.

I really need to finish my lunch. lol

If I have hurt the band's feelings, I do apologize... but I think I've probably hurt the fans feelings much more than the band. The band SHOULD be firmly grounded in reality... the fans... not so much.

And, I am NOT being smug. I'm being serious. I'm a HUGE fan of lots of bands, but I try to put their careers and successes in perspective. To 99% of the music buying public, The Raspberries were a group that had one hit single, a few mid-chart almost hits, four albums that didn't really sell all that well, and a live concert base that was fairly non-existant at the time of their "success." That 35 years later a few thousand people are still clinging to their music is fantastic. I'm one of them. I like Stories, The Pezband, Orpheus, Nazz and a zillion others that had a moment (or not) and I'm thinking they were underrated for the time, and I'm glad I can still find their songs relevant to my tastebuds, but I'm not petitioning for status in the RRHOF... Sorry...

I never noticed your overbite ;)

P.S. I brought Barenaked Ladies to Sire in 1991, and they went on to sell about 30 million records worldwide, and sold countless concert tickets, but I'm afraid their career may be summed up by their singer's drug bust in Syracuse a couple of weeks ago... and even if it hadn't happened, I wasn't thinking they would be gaining admittance to the RRHOF in the next few decades either.

Well, that's cause you're not looking close enough!

Look, all kidding aside. Vote or not...your choice. I can respect that. But in the end...if it makes some of us happy to hope that the band gets into the RRHF, why not give us that...for even a day. Cause we all do know, that in the "big picture," we deal with alot more everyday, then whether the band gets inducted or not. Sometimes hope can make one feel good.

Marc,99% of the music buying public does not know who Percy Sledge, or the VU are. I maintain The Raspberries influence on the Power Pop genre is their strongest argument for HOF entry. I know I stated that before...just being redundant.

Thou doth protest too much, methinks. (That is, you couldn't be more smug and condescending toward fans.) (IMHO.)

as much as i love the raspberries and support them,i kinda agree with marc..i knew what he meant, and have no problem w/that..maybe,just maybe,if the guys put out something new,it woukd take them over the "top" as far as critics, unknown fans,etc....then,and maybe then, the music industry in general, will "get it" per say,as we all have after all these years..it would shut up the mouths of the cynical, the doubters, then, and only then, the guys will get their due respect..just my opinion..for now!! many more to come i'm sure, till then,i love you guys..lol,chris...sorry 'bout the spelling earlier!!

Just for the record...a total of 5,702 artists reached the Billboard hot 100 charts between 1958 and 1999. who are these other 50,000 artists! I demand answers!

Yes Steve, but 99% of the population don't know any of the 'berries' songs by name, whereas EVERYONE knows "When A Man Loves A Woman."

Who knows a Dells song by name? A VU song? A Sex Pistols song? A Buffalo Springfield song? A Grandmaster Flash song? A Patty Smith song? Probably less than would know the top 5 GATW.

Well this is an argument that can't be won. I'll give you VU and Patty Smith, but I'd bet that a large majority of the population knows "For What It's Worth", "Never Mind the Bullocks", and "The Message." Like I said, a non-winnable argument.

I don't think so...not by name. I believe just as many people would know GATW if they heard it..No way on the Sex Pistols...they never charted a single. Same with Grandmaster...White kids didn't listen to that by and large. No one knows the name of 'For What It's Worth'...they think it's 'Stop,Hey What's That Sound'. GATW was a much bigger hit than any of them. Non- winnable...but fun making the points. You are a worthy adversary Marvin!
